Bhubaneswar recently earned the title of ‘City with the Best Public Transport System’ at the 17th Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference, highlighting the transformative work of Arun Bothra, IPS, and Thirumal Naik, MD of Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT). Launched in 2018 under Bothra’s leadership, the Mo Bus initiative revamped urban mobility, offering a fleet of 200 buses equipped with modern amenities like free Wi-Fi, CCTV, GPS, and real-time tracking. Expanded with 95 electric buses, Mo Bus is now a symbol of sustainable, user-friendly travel, with plans to add 450 more electric buses and advanced ticketing systems soon. Bhubaneswar’s focus on inclusivity shines with its 50 e-rickshaws driven by marginalized community members, promoting both empowerment and accessibility. Additionally, the Integrated Road Accident Database (IRAD), introduced in 2021, provides data-driven insights to improve road safety across Odisha. Complementing this is Project Vahak, training heavy vehicle drivers in defensive driving, safety, and fuel efficiency. Naik envisions a smarter, more integrated future for Bhubaneswar's transit. Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Puri will soon witness the launch of electric double-decker buses, starting January 6, 2025. Announced by Odisha's Urban Development Minister, Dr. Krishna Chandra Mohapatra, the initiative is part of the state's push toward sustainable urban transport solutions. The first bus arrives in Bhubaneswar today, with three more scheduled to reach shortly from Mumbai. Initially, these buses will cater to non-resident Indians (NRIs) during special events and later be opened for public use. Minister Mohapatra, while inspecting ongoing roadwork and beautification efforts ahead of the launch, emphasized the buses' cultural significance, as they will feature Odisha-inspired designs showcasing the state's rich heritage.
