From the early days of parliamentary interpretation in 1959, interpreters have played a big role in Canada’s democratic landscape. As we mark the #TranslationBureau’s 90th anniversary, let’s celebrate the incredible journey of our interpreters, past and present, who have connected people, ideas and nations for decades. It is important to embed information in different languages. Thanks to Louth County Council for providing information on voting in diverse languages. This is something every organisation, County's in Ireland and government department should embed in their organisation's systemic culture. Providing information in an accessible way helps break communication barriers and this promotes a sense of belonging and inclusiveness in our community. I urge every organisation especially government bodies to adopt this in their systemic approach to the community. #givepeoplevoice #reduceculturalshock #promotingacceptance #promotinginclusivesociety #breakcommunicationbarrier #promotingeasycommunication #promotingsenseofbelonging #Independentcandidate #seungraceatiroko #DundalkSouth
It’s thanks to the tireless work of interpreters such as Britta from DG LINC that members of the European Parliament can work together across language barriers. We joined her for the day to find out what life is like as a European Parliament interpreter.

Today is United Nations Day. Did you know the UN has a speech bank for interpreters? 🗣️The speeches are classified by topic, language and level of difficulty. 👍🏻What a great tool for independent interpreting practice. Unlike similar speech banks (of the European Commission for example), this one includes Russian. https://lnkd.in/e_x9cUm6 #yelenatranslator

#Multilingualism is a cornerstone of the European Union (#EU), reflecting its diverse cultural and linguistic landscape. This diversity, while presenting challenges, also offers significant benefits in the legislative process. Here's how multilingualism positively impacts EU legislation: 1️⃣ Inclusive and Representative Legislation: 👫Diverse Perspectives: Multilingualism ensures that legislation is drafted with a broad range of perspectives in mind. It allows for the consideration of the needs and interests of different language groups within the EU. 📚Cultural Sensitivity: By involving multiple languages, the EU can create legislation that is more culturally sensitive and avoids unintended negative consequences for specific linguistic communities. 2️⃣ Improved Transparency and Accessibility: 🤔Enhanced Understanding: When legislation is available in multiple languages, it becomes more accessible to a wider audience, fostering transparency and understanding. 🤷Reduced Misunderstandings: The availability of legislation in different languages can help to reduce misunderstandings and ensure that all stakeholders have a clear understanding of its implications. 3️⃣ Strengthened Democratic Legitimacy: 🎢 Citizen Participation: Multilingualism promotes citizen participation in the legislative process. When legislation is available in a citizen's native language, they are more likely to engage in public consultations and express their views. 🧾Accountability: Multilingualism can enhance the accountability of EU institutions by making it easier for citizens to understand and scrutinize legislative proposals. 4️⃣ Facilitated Cooperation and Integration: 🚧Breaking Down Barriers: Multilingualism can help to break down linguistic barriers between EU member states, fostering cooperation and integration. 👩🏫Shared Understanding: By promoting a shared understanding of EU laws and regulations, multilingualism can contribute to a more cohesive and united Europe. In conclusion, multilingualism plays a vital role in the EU's legislative process. It ensures that legislation is inclusive, transparent, and accessible to all citizens, while also promoting cooperation and integration among member states.

The lecturer reminded of the EU motto: United in diversity. It means co-operation for peace and prosperity, while at the same time being enriched by many different cultures, traditions and languages in EU. Further, she discussed border management, migration policy, asylum policy and police co-operation among EU Member States. Useful background for translators and interpreters engaged in work for EU institutions. Very interesting to follow, illustrated not only with maps and graphs but also lecturer's photos taken of EU breathtaking landscapes. An extra for me: a revision of European geography. #TEPIS #translation #interpretation #translator #interpreter #sworn #certified #EU #EUexternalpolicy #EuropeanUnion #unitedindiversity

On the 21st of July, Belgium celebrates its annual Fête Nationale (National Day). If you head into the city centre of Brussels on the day of this celebration, you are never quite sure what awaits you. For me last year, it was a climbing wall and zipline at the top of Mont des Arts; this year, an impromptu visit to the Belgian Federal Parliament building, 'Le Palais de la Nation' (The Palace of the Nation). One thing that caught my eye as I wandered around the building was... you guessed it... the interpreting equipment. In the hemicycles, meeting rooms and even offices, there was space set aside for interpreters to work, be that booths or a desk surrounded by plexiglass at the back of the room. It goes to show, I believe, how interpreters - as 'invisible' as we are sometimes said to be - are crucial to the functioning of democracy in multilingual settings. In Belgium, the national motto is "L'union fait la force" (unity builds strength) and interpreters at a parliament with three official languages help to foment this cohesion by ensuring that everyone can understand and be understood without language barriers. So could we say, therefore, that it is interpreters at the Belgian parliament "qui font l'union qui fait la force" (who build the unity that builds strength)? #interpreting #simultaneous #terplife #research #phd #french #flemish #german
