At Greater Lawrence Technical School (GLTS), the Advanced Manufacturing Program isn’t just preparing students for careers—it’s launching them into the future. Under the leadership of Don Ouellette, a Mastercam advocate with 30+ years of experience, students are mastering the art of precision manufacturing while taking on projects with real-world impact. This year, GLTS students achieved something extraordinary: manufacturing NASA-approved parts for the International Space Station. Using Mastercam CAD/CAM software and multi-axis machining, these students tackled the complexities of spaceflight hardware, proving that they’re ready to meet the demands of the most advanced industries. 🛠️ Discover how Mastercam played a vital role in NASA projects, reverse engineering a lawn mower engine, and even creating custom chess sets to teach multi-axis machining strategies. 👉 Read the full story to learn how Mastercam is shaping the future of manufacturing education. #Mastercam #AdvancedManufacturing #CNCProgramming #CADCAM #CNC #NASA

As we continue to recognize and celebrate National Manufacturing Month, we take pride in being part of some of the most impressive engineering feats in the world. Our contributions help power groundbreaking technology, including components for the L3Harris Technologies RS-5 Core Stage Engine, which powers the core stage of NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Space Launch System, as well as engines behind other major aerospace projects. Here are some impressive facts about the RS-25 engine that showcase the magnitude of what we help make possible: The four RS-25 engines on the Space Launch System (SLS) propel the rocket 73 times faster than an Indy 500 car. Hot gases exit the RS-25’s nozzle at 9,600 miles per hour — 13 times the speed of sound. That’s fast enough to go from Los Angeles to New York City in 15 minutes. The RS-25 engine generates enough thrust to keep eight Boeing 747s aloft simultaneously. If it produced electricity instead of rocket thrust, the RS-25 could power nearly 850,000 miles of streetlights, enough to go to the moon and back, and circle the Earth 15 times. Each turbine blade in the RS-25’s high-pressure fuel turbopump generates more horsepower than a Corvette ZR1. This shows how Howmet Engine Systems plays a critical role in achieving the extraordinary, whether it’s launching rockets into space or supporting advanced technologies that shape the future. #NationalManufacturingMonth #NASA #SpaceLaunchSystem #wearehowmet

An Inside Look at NASA’s Large Composite Rocket Fuel Tank 👀 A team of engineers from both NASA and Boeing came up with a unique propellant tank design and manufacturing process to build one of the largest composite rocket fuel tanks few years ago. 🚀 The primary objective of the project was to refine the processes and technology in making these composite cryogenic propellant tanks suitable for future heavy lift vehicles and other in-space application. 🤩 NASA experts learned from prior tank designs and testing and helped devise ways to combat imperfections such as microscopic leaks, found in previous composite tanks. The team leveraged Boeing’s experience producing composites for aircraft to use a unique fiber-placement technique and new materials that did not require expensive curing processes in autoclaves, procedures traditionally associated with composite production.😎 Curious to learn more about composites' role in aerospace? 🚀 👉 Additive Manufacturing: NASA RD Rocket Engine https://bit.ly/3DawFiz 👈 🚀 🚀 The Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine generates thrust through continuous, spinning detonation waves within a circular combustion chamber. Compared to traditional subsonic combustion engines, it achieves higher efficiency and specific impulse or how effectively a rocket uses its propellant. 🚀 This engine may enable more efficient and reusable propulsion systems for future missions. This innovation relies on additive manufacturing (AM) laser powder bed fusion and specialized NASA alloys, such as GRCop-42 for thermal conductivity and GRX-810 for extreme temperature resilience. These materials and techniques facilitate the creation of complex integrated structures, including coolant channels and injector orifices, that are impossible to machine traditionally. Rigorous testing of temperature, pressure, and vibratory responses ensures reliability under the severe conditions of spaceflight. 🚀 The NASA MSFC Rotating Detonating Rocket Engine together with Venus Aerospace and REM Surface Engineering is nominated for the 2024 Aerospace, Space or Defence Application of the year. #additiveManufacturing #nasa #rocket #engine #space #smartMaterials #manufacturing #industry #medical #prosthetics #healthcare #construction #future #now
