Because most people don't get it about supply chain... This infographic shows the supply chain city: 🏠 Manufacturing Plant ✅ Operations Manager 👉 I am responsible for the day-to-day operations ✅ Materials Planner👉 I take care of availability of the materials to keep the plant running ✅ Production Planner/ Master Scheduler 👉 I schedule production to execute the plan in S&OP 🏠 Corporate Office ✅ Demand Planner 👉 I create the demand forecast to optimize inventory ✅ Supply Planner 👉 I create the supply plan to meet demand ✅ S&OP Lead 👉 I take care of making S&OP happen ✅ Procurement Manager 👉 I work with vendors to minimize total cost of ownership (beyond price) 🏠 Warehouse/ Distribution Center ✅ Logistics Manager👉 I manage transport, warehousing, inventory, minimizing cost and meeting customers’ expectations Any others to add to the supply chain city?
Hi Marcia. This is a fun Infographic demonstrating that the city cannot function and maintain without the contributions of the constituents. > The "City" building leadership identifies and reviews the needs. From there, plans are created to answer the what, where, when, how much, etc. > Next, the city's "Public Works" department prepares the execution plan, answering capacity, timelines, and resource requirements. > Finally, the "city crew" executes and delivers the final finished results of the plan. Closing the loop of the performance plan will identify the areas of the strengths as well as future improvement opportunities. Thank you for this great analogy of the Supply Chain City!
Great post! 👏 Adopting these practices is key to ensuring both operational efficiency and a stable, sustainable business. Each role plays a strategic part in balancing cost, service, and inventory, which are critical for long-term success. Especially, a strong focus on demand and supply planning helps avoid excess costs and ensures customer satisfaction. A well-structured S&OP process aligns all teams, preventing bottlenecks and driving growth. Integrating these areas strengthens the supply chain and keeps the business resilient and sustainable!
In many pharmaceuticals companies demand Planner based at manufacturing plant...is this right approach?
I really like the analogy of a supply chain city. Just as a well-designed city shapes the public and private realms where we live, work, and interact, a well-structured supply chain team with clarity of role and process ensures the elegance and resilience of our operations. Each role contributes to overall harmony and efficiency, much like different parts of a city working together, enabling communities to thrive and meet contemporary challenges. From my days in architecture school, I remember learning about Roman architect Vitruvius and his three principles of architecture: firmitas (strength), utilitas (utility), and venustas (beauty)…certainly applicable to process and organizational design as well.
That's a comprehensive overview! To make the "supply chain city" even more complete, you might consider adding: ✅ Quality Control Manager: Ensures products meet quality standards at every stage. ✅ Customer Service Manager: Addresses customer needs and feedback, ensuring satisfaction. ✅ IT Systems Manager: Manages the software and systems that support supply chain operations. ✅ Environmental Manager: Oversees environmental compliance and sustainability initiatives. These roles ensure every aspect of the supply chain is covered from production to customer satisfaction. 🌟
Great infographic Marcia D Williams ! A few roles that could also be highlighted in the supply chain city: Data Analysts: Providing insights from data to optimize supply chain performance Continuous Improvement Leader: Focused on driving efficiency and eliminating waste Inventory Specialist: Ensuring accurate stock levels to minimize disruptions supply chain is a complex interconnected system, and these roles all play a vital part in making it work smoothly!
Additionally, the Data Analyst could be vital, using insights from supply chain data to identify areas for improvement, forecasting trends, and optimizing operations across the entire supply chain.
Marcia D Williams This is a beautiful pictorial representation! I love it! Recently I was fascinated to learn about Crisis Management Teams - specialized groups that monitor potential disruptions and work collaboratively to minimize their impact. They play a vital role in protecting organizations from major setbacks. Since this function requires a strategic, big-picture view of operations, it would make perfect sense to manage it from the corporate office, where teams have visibility across the entire organization and can coordinate rapid responses when needed. Thank you for sharing infographics!
The infographic clearly captures the interconnected roles in a typical supply chain ecosystem. Thanks for sharing. Breakdown of key roles such as the Operations Manager and Materials Planner within the manufacturing plant highlights the operational complexities that require precise coordination. One additional role that could add value is a Continuous Improvement /Kaizen Manager who focuses on eliminating waste through Lean methodologies, driving operational efficiency across departments. What are your thoughts on integrating such a role?

2mo🏠 Supply Chain Management ✅ Planning 👉 is the foundation of effective SCM. It involves forecasting demand, determining the resources needed, and planning the logistics of the entire supply chain. Effective planning ensures that businesses can meet customer demands efficiently while minimizing costs. ✅ Sourcing 👉 in SCM refers to selecting suppliers and managing relationships with them to procure quality raw materials and components. It’s crucial for ensuring the quality and cost-effectiveness of the end product. ✅ Manufacturing 👉 It involves scheduling, production planning, quality control, and maintenance of manufacturing facilities. Efficient manufacturing practices are vital for meeting production targets and maintaining competitive advantage. ✅ Delivering 👉 It encompasses logistics planning, transportation management, warehousing, and inventory control, all geared toward efficiently delivering products to the end customer. ✅ Returning 👉 Returns management is an often-overlooked but crucial part of SCM. It involves handling returned products efficiently and effectively. Thanks Marcia D Williams Excellent Infographics as always 🙏🙏🙏 Have an amazing Day!
