Am I boring? Over the years, my life has shifted in ways I never quite expected. Gone are the constant thrill-chasing days, replaced by routines that might seem “boring” at first glance—yet I’ve never felt more fulfilled. What fills my bucket now? Things like watching my kids grow, building meaningful learning resources, and creating spaces where children can explore, play, and thrive—spaces where play is honoured as an essential part of human development. As an early childhood educator and content creator, I’ve come to understand the value of self-reflection as a daily practice. In child care workplaces, taking the time to pause and evaluate not only improves our approach but also strengthens the impact we have on the children and families we care for. I’ve extended this habit into my home life, and it’s become something 'super-mega' in my life. Self-reflection has made me more intentional, giving me space to see what truly matters and appreciate what might once have seemed ordinary. This philosophy is at the heart of Nurturing Play and Beyond, a program I’m incredibly proud of. With enrollment open for our 2025 cohort, I’m thrilled to welcome educators who want to dive deeper into these practices—transforming not only how they teach but how they live. Heads up! Your youth may experience puberty earlier than expected. A 2020 study found that the age of pubertal onset has decreased by 3 months every decade since 1977. 🤯 While the reasons for this are still unknown, it is more important than ever that we gear up to be prepared, notice, and show up when the time comes. Here's what we recommend: ❤️ Have casual chats about the changes that will occur earlier! 4th grade is prime time to start having conversations about the physical, social, and emotional changes that either your youth or their peers will soon experience. ❤️ Next time you need to buy yourself or someone you know period products, take your youth with you and get them to help you find what you're looking for! ❤️ Self-esteem is a stairway. By starting to build their self-esteem and confidence now, youth will have the tools to continue this work well into their adolescence. ❤️ Are adolescents frequently at or near your workplace? Create a menstruation station in your bathrooms! ❤️ Enroll your youth in one of Body Basics and Beyond's education programs! We have grades 4th-8th for female-typical preparation and 6th-8th for male-typical preparation. ❤️ Do you serve as a trusted adult to youth? Why is it important, in early childhood settings/programmes and at home, for children to not only spend time outdoors, but to ENGAGE with the outdoors, nature and their community? I share my 10 best reasons below. 1. Greater opportunities for physical and sensory development. Children move and use their bodies and also touch, feel and interact with the elements of nature with their senses. 2. Ecological consciousness and learning. Children become aware of and learn about how human life impacts the environment and develop views and attitudes that transcend the human-centric. 3. Communication and language development. Children develop and use a variety of language forms in interacting with other children, adults, animals and the rest of nature. 4. Departure from colonialist paradigms where learning is either only understood as children sitting still and listening to an adult or when indoor learning is projected as more valuable or important than outdoor learning. Children begin to understand the power and value of their own agency in learning and their ability to direct their own social and academic advancement. 5. Concrete learning and provision of a foundation for indoor learning. When children interact with concrete aspects of life outdoors, the learning they gain from books and digital resources mostly found indoors are made meaningful. 6. Health benefits. As children engage with the life within their community, their awareness and understanding of the world and of the cultures and society in which they live is enhanced. 8. There are several skills that can be promoted when children spend time in nature and outdoors within their community such as turn taking, collaboration, empathy, self awareness and confidence. We often talk about fine motor development in the early years in relation to being able to hold a pencil and write. Let's expand our view on how we can encourage this development through practical life experiences. Simply put, when children engage in everyday activities alongside adults they gain not only fine motor skills but essential life skills (and CONFIDENCE!) Children enjoy working on real jobs with real tools like a knife (the one in the photo is a plastic serrated knife sized for little hands). Yes, there is some risk involved, but young children are capable of working with seriousness and caution under the thoughtful guidance of adults. That means, before we put a knife into a child's hands we... ...introduce the tool and its intention. ...point out safety considerations. ...model how to hold and maneuver the tool. ...set limits around how the tool can be used. ...scaffold the learning depending on individual children. Some children will jump in with gusto and we may have to slow them down. Some children will need a bit of encouragement to get started. Some children may simply want to observe others using the tool initially. All are OK! Giving children opportunities to do this kind of work is so rich in learning. Developing one's fine motor skills is just one facet of learning practical life skills. Children will also learn about responsibility, persistence, being a part of a community, and increase their belief in their own abilities.
