Although Africa is responsible for less than 4% of global CO₂ emissions, the continent is bearing the brunt of the consequences. In this context, transitioning to a #low_carbon growth model and investing in climate adaptation are no longer just environmental necessities, they are becoming economic and social priorities. Africa has immense potential to harness renewable energy sources, such as solar and #hydropower, and to capitalize on green innovations. It’s time for African governments to stop seeing climate change as an inevitable fate and instead seize this unique opportunity to rethink their development model. Beyond words, the time has come to turn intentions into action. #MondayQuote #ClimateAction #SustainableDevelopment #AfricaRising #RenewableEnergy #ClimateAdaptation

🌍 Climate action in South Africa starts with solar. As fossil fuels become increasingly unsustainable, we see solar power as key to securing South Africa’s energy future and combating climate change. In our latest Light Paper, we explore how solar and renewables are critical to building resilience against extreme weather events, like recent floods and record rainfall, and why the shift to sustainability is not just necessary—it’s smart business. “Investing in solar is one of the most significant contributions South Africa can make to fight climate change while saving money long term,” says our CEO, Andrew Middleton. The journey to a solar-powered future isn’t without its challenges, but the opportunities to create a sustainable, resilient tomorrow are immense. Read more on iAfrica.com: https://lnkd.in/eVymbUUd

⚡ The International Energy Agency (IEA) calculates that with the right #energyefficiency policies, the world can achieve more than 40% of the emissions cuts needed to reach international climate goals using cost-effective technologies that are ALREADY available. 🌐 In some countries in Asia and in Sub-Saharan Africa, energy poverty rates exceed 50% of the population. Industrial energy efficiency can reduce pressure on the energy grid and improve much needed access to electricity as a result. The easiest and cheapest clean energy solution lies in the energy we don’t use! 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚’𝐬 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭, 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐬 South Africa, the world’s 14th largest carbon emitter, faces a critical challenge: aligning its climate commitments with actual progress. Despite ambitious goals and significant pledges, the pace of transitioning from coal to renewable energy is far too slow. The latest Presidential Climate Commission report highlights a need for a dramatic increase in renewable energy capacity—from 10.4 GW to up to 390 GW by 2050. While President Cyril Ramaphosa has enacted new climate legislation and donors are supporting the transition with $12 billion, the country struggles with contradictory policies and underinvestment. How can South Africa accelerate its climate action and bridge this growing gap? #ClimateAction #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability #SouthAfrica #Africa #CarbonEmissions

We know the statistics – over half a billion people in Africa lack access to electricity. However, if we look at this challenge from the ‘glass-half-full’ lens’, is there an upside to this dire situation? Our answer is yes. Why? As different organisations and countries work towards connecting the underserved and unserved in the continent to power, there are numerous opportunities to ensure that these communities are electrified by clean, sustainable power. In this way, Africa would be able to bypass the negative effects of fossil fuels such as air and water pollution and global warming that so many of the developed countries are grappling with and attempting to phase out. By going ‘clean and green’ through adopting modern energy solutions such as solar, wind, and hydropower, Africa would not only be able to meet its energy needs and spur its economy but would also contribute to global efforts to mitigate climate change. And this explains our commitment to financing clean energy projects to meet the energy needs of vulnerable households and communities, ultimately contributing towards the attainment of universal energy access. #FinancingEnergyProsperity #CleanEnergy #Sustainability #SustainableEnergy #minigrid #offgridsolar #energyaccess #SustainableDevelopment #SolarPower #SolarEnergy #SolarPanels

CLIMATE FINANCE AND RENEWABLES. A powerful reminder today about energy justice in Africa: At COP29 Azerbaijan The story of #energy in #Africa isn't just about access it's about sovereignty and self-determination. Despite decades of #oilextraction, over 50% of people in many resource rich African nations still lack basic energy access. This isn't just an energy crisis; it's the lasting impact of #neo-colonialism. Key insights from a compelling speech I heard: • Renewable energy isn't just an #environmental choice it's a path to true #energy independence. • Current extraction models have led to environmental devastation, affecting local communities' ability to farm and fish. • Africa has the potential to be a global renewable energy leader, with abundant solar and wind resources. • The transition must prioritize ethical mining practices and end exploitation of local communities. • Real solutions require African voices at the decision-making table The future of energy in Africa must be decolonized. This means: 1. 100% renewable energy solutions tailored to local needs. 2. Community-led development and ownership. 3. Ethical resource management. 4. Technology transfer and capacity building. As we discuss global energy #transitions, let's ensure we're not perpetuating colonial patterns. True energy justice means empowering communities to choose and implement solutions that work for them. POWERING A BETTER FUTURE WITH CLEAN ENERGY Africa may contribute only a small fraction to global greenhouse gas emissions, but the impact of climate change here is huge. From food security to energy access, and even the threat of conflicts over resources—these are challenges our communities face every day. And why? Because we haven't yet fully unlocked the potential of clean energy and sustainable solutions? We all want to see our communities thrive, to be healthy and resilient in the face of a changing climate. The key to this? Clean energy. But it's not just about switching to renewable sources—it's about making sure everyone has a say in how we do it. Imagine a future where every family has access to clean, reliable energy. Where young people are leading the charge in their communities, not just as beneficiaries, but as decision-makers. This is the kind of future we need to build together. For real change to happen, we have to bring everyone to the table. We need to listen to the voices of those who are often left out—community organizations, local leaders, the youth. By working together, we can create energy solutions that not only protect our environment but also lift up those who need it most. Clean energy isn’t just about reducing carbon emissions; it’s about creating a fairer, healthier world for all of us. Let’s make sure that as we push for progress, we do it in a way that includes and benefits everyone. -Seleina 🔴 #CleanEnergy #ClimateAction #SustainableDevelopment #YouthLeadership #GreenSolutions #TogetherWeCan #EnvironmentalRights
