We had the opportunity to talk to Prof Steinberger about the "REAL" project. The #ERC is funding this research project that is looking at how societies in the North and South can manage the economic, political and social transition to and in a post-growth era. https://lnkd.in/eBXyvXdH #jksteinberger #HorizonEU
Have a look at our latest Horizon Europe Success Story with Prof Julia Steinberger from the University of Lausanne, Institute of Geography and Sustainability, who was the lucky recipient of an ERC Synergy Grant in 2022. She gives us an insight into how she went about it and how Euresearch was able to support her. https://t.ly/shOhN #HorizonEU #SwissEU4Research #SwissEU4Innovation University of Lausanne - UNIL Julia Steinberger Anne-Emmanuelle de Crousaz

Something Interesting #37 SCIENCE The World Science Day for Peace and Development is celebrated each year on Nov 10. It was proclaimed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO) in 2001.🔬 🔬Scientific Facts:🔬 💦 Hot water freezes faster than cold water. A laser can get trapped in water. 💧 Water can exist in three states at once (Triple Point — Gas, Liquid & Solid). 🦓 Animals use Earth’s magnetic field for orientation. 🌧 A cloud can weigh around a million pounds. 50% of the world’s oxygen is produced by the sea. 🌿 Plants can release aromas to alert plant neighbours that they’re under attack. ⚛️ A 5th-grader accidentally created a new molecule in 2012.(Tetranitratoxycarbon) 🌋 Speech recognition technology is helping researchers understand volcano behaviour. 🏍 Gyroscopic effect keeps a bike balanced. 📲 Touch phones don’t detect certain materials because of electrical charge.. ➕️ We can use our fingers to get the times table of 9 👆 Stretch out your hands! Starting with your left pinky finger, put it down and you’ll get 9 (1 x 9). 👆 Next, put down only your left ring finger, and you’ll get 18 (2 x 9). 👆 After that, put down only your left middle finger, and you’ll get 27 (3 x 9), and so on… Read More... 👇👇👇 https://lnkd.in/gjYHpyXY

🐝 The final paper of my PhD is out! 🐝 It may have been already - or just only - two years from my #PhDone, but finally it's all out there. I'm incredibly grateful for all my collaborators, supervisors and the support I've had along the way. Plan Bee didn't always work out, but I could always lean on the hive. 📝1️⃣ ArcHives—combined palynological, genomic and lipid analysis of medieval wax seals 👉 Medieval seals form large collections which, along with the historical information in the documents that the seals are attached to, is a potential biomolecular treasure. For example, pollen from the seals tell us about honeybee foraging as a provenancing fingerprint, including information about the storage conditions of the artefacts. https://lnkd.in/djVrrbAb 📝2️⃣ Beescapes – extracting pollen from historical Danish beeswax to explore honeybee foraging 👉 We found that information gained from palynological analysis of museum samples may be useful in illuminating details of historical apiology. We present our study in light of the importance of environmental biodiversity in Denmark and its vitality for bees as key pollinators in our ecosystem. https://lnkd.in/dpZ5haYr 📝3️⃣ A queen’s tale: Assessing the hidden potential of beeswax specimens in Natural History Museum collections 👉 We examine an intact and closed honeybee queen cell specimen from the 19th century. With the help of X-ray CT, a queen bee and residues of its developmental environment, such as MRJP’s, were identified. https://lnkd.in/dDSZGx7u Huge thanks to also #HorizonEU #MSCA, Carlsberg Foundation and Danmarks Grundforskningsfond / The Danish National Research Foundation for funding my PhD and the ArcHives research. 🐝 🇪🇺🇩🇰

#ScientificFreedom - an urgent issue, as seen both by UNESCO and #Germany. A few days ago, the UNESCO #ExecutiveBoard welcomed a "Call to Action" to raise the profile of Scientific Freedom on the global agenda, and to guide UNESCO’s brandnew programme on the promotion of Scientific Freedom and the Safety of Scientists. In Germany, 2024 is the #AnnualScienceYear of #Freedom, during which the promotion of Scientific Freedom and the Safety of Scientists is one of the core issues. As UNESCO has put it: "Science can best flourish in an open and safe ecosystem that encourages the free flow of ideas. Today scientists face increasing and multifaceted threats, triggered either by personal characteristics, their choice of research or the context in which they find themselves (i.e. fieldwork, conflicts, emergency situations, etc.). Expanding our limited understanding of the phenomenon is a first necessary step towards effective action. A surge of populism, misinformation, and the impact of new technologies increase pressure on safety and freedom of scientists".
