We are deeply concerned by the advancement of a bill to privatise Israel’s public broadcaster. This bill is the latest in a line of threats to undermine #mediafreedom. If it comes to pass, it will end Kan's source of public funding and effectively eliminate #publicmedia in the country. Dangerous precedent on #psm The israeli government plans to "privatize the Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation by ending its public funding and seeking a private buyer. If no buyer is found for its TV and radio networks, the broadcaster could be closed within two years. This new bill follows a recent proposal that threatens to put the broadcaster’s budget under direct state control and another allowing the government to take over the television rating measurement system." At at time where #publicservicemedia is more important than ever, the israeli government is undermining its psb with these threats. This is in addition to moves in the private sector, where they've banned government funding for advertising on the oldest newspaper in country, Haaretz. "According to media reports today, the Israeli Attorney General’s office has raised serious concerns about the procedural flaws in the proposed law and the grave risk it poses to media freedom. Deputy Attorney-Generals Avital Sompolinsky and Meir Levin are quoted as saying the bill: “joins a series of proposals being advanced at this time that threaten the corporation’s (Kan’s) independence and ability to fulfil its public roles.”" "EBU Director General Noel Curran says: "Public service broadcasting in Israel is under sustained political attack, facing threats that not only jeopardize its independence but its very existence in the future. We share the concern of the Attorney General`s office that this is a political reaction to KAN`s content, from a Government that wants to either get more control over it or shut down the broadcaster altogether.”" #freedomofthepress #media #mediaindustry #newsmedia #psm #ebu #freespeech #freedomofspeech

"News Corp’s obsession with the public broadcaster is unbalanced and, at times, fairly unhinged and should largely be ignored." ==> A foreign owned and controlled broadcaster, News Corp, with a dominant position in Australia's news media markets, is engaged in attacking Australia's democracy (on the basis that the fourth estate is a pillar of our democracy). And those attacks on our democracy should be ignored? Can we have some other ideas, besides just ignoring it? How do we come together as a nation and fight back against foreign interference in our government, politics, military and security services that has harmed the interests of young Australians? How do we stop the assets and human rights of young Australians from being stripped?
New chair Kim Williams says ABC should be ‘last broadcaster standing’ and News Corp’s criticism is ‘unbalanced’

Experts say it is a matter of concern about the opaque and selective public consultation process around the draft Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill, 2024 if the revised version of the draft Bill was shared with limited stakeholders to seek their feedback. The lack of transparency raises questions about the Bill's legitimacy, undermines inclusiveness, and contravenes the Pre-legislative Consultation Policy, 2014. A recently digitised research on ResearchAfrica examines the benefits and challenges of airwave deregulation in Nigeria's broadcasting industry since the 1992 reforms. Key findings: - Deregulation promoted efficiency, competition, and accessibility, but also led to unethical practices by some broadcasters. - Regulatory bodies need to better enforce standards and ethics to address the challenges. - The media's role as an agent of development should be further supported through continued deregulation and stakeholder collaboration.
