More council housing powers! 🏡🏠 Is this the silver bullet? Comment below 👇👇 Local councils are to be given more power to build much-needed affordable housing, thanks to the ability to purchase cheaper land. Cheaper costs for the purchase of housing will ensure that councils are able to easier transform communities, and begin to tackle the worsening homelessness crisis around the country. The importance of this move was explained by Kate Henderson, Chief Executive of the National Housing Federation, who said: “Enabling local councils to buy cheaper land through Compulsory Purchase Orders without paying ‘hope value’ will allow them to build more of the desperately needed affordable homes the country needs, in the right places for the people who need it most.” https://lnkd.in/dFsMxdp7 Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities Jacob Young MP National Housing Federation Kate Henderson #Housing #AffordableHousing #CouncilHousing #LocalGovernment #Homes #Homelessness

"Addressing the shortfall in social and affordable housing dwellings would require an investment of around $290 billion over the next two decades. So, why haven’t we used this number to develop a long-term housing strategy that would create the essential housing infrastructure we need for a prosperous future Australia? Why are governments so averse to setting meaningful and ambitious goals like this?" Tasmania is the only state that is about to have a Housing Strategy that acknowledges the solution rests in addressing the entire housing continuum. Bristol council could create innovative new housing company 🏘️👀 Bristol City Council has approved moving towards a new housing company, which will become a Registered Provider (housing association), to help tackle the city's housing crisis. Councillor Tom Renhard, Cabinet Member for Housing Delivery and Homelessness, said: “One of the biggest interventions that we can make to improve people’s lives in the city is providing a safe and secure home. More than 12,500 new homes had been built by April 2023, with another 3,000 under construction as of then, and plans for over 3,000 new council homes by 2029. “We’re working to continue tackling the housing crisis, which includes addressing affordability in the private rented sector and the need for more temporary accommodation and supported housing..." While the City of Ottawa has committed to ongoing support for innovative approaches to ending homelessness, it's still not enough. Despite the best efforts of many, the needle continues to move in the wrong direction. The housing crisis was created over decades and is exacerbated by factors beyond municipal control. It is cheaper, smarter, and more compassionate to invest in making sure that everyone in our community has a home. At the joint Finance and Planning & Housing Committee this week, we shared the following key messages: 1️⃣ Providing stable predictable funding is key to encouraging steady growth. 2️⃣ Focusing on permanent affordable housing and the supports tenants need, even in the face of external factors beyond our control, shows a commitment to solutions. 3️⃣ The commitment to strong ongoing advocacy from the City of Ottawa to other orders of government is invaluable. 4️⃣ The City of Ottawa's commitment to exploring innovative new tools is most welcome.

Did you know that the local authority in Edinburgh recently declared a housing emergency for residents? 😬 As of February 2024, there are 6453 homeless priority applications awaiting emergency accommodation. Yet, only 2,079 homes were advertised by landlords between April 2023 and January 2024 📢 Some individuals on the list could face a ten year wait to secure a council home 🤯 There's no avoiding that there is a major homing crisis going on in Edinburgh, and we want to do all we can to help. This is why we buy properties with the purpose of leasing them to the council, so we can give back to our local community and make a real difference through investing 🌻 Everyone has a right to a warm and safe home 🏡 #jayhogartyproperties #property #investor https://lnkd.in/en5eZtDp

In light of yesterdays comments from London Councils, urgent action to significantly increase supply and reduce costs can no longer wait. In an environment where demand is increasing 10% year-on-year, and Londons Councils are spending £3m a day on temporary accommodation, it is imperative that action is taken immediately to avoid financial meltdown. We have spent the last 8 years building the infrastructure to significantly reduce homelessness. To date, we have provided over 1,500+ properties to London Councils to directly alleviate pressure - but we can, and we should be doing more. Our #2030 ambition is to provide a further 5,000 homes to councils across the Capital. Here are some of the most common and progressive affordable housing programs in the United States: Subsidized Housing Programs: Public Housing: Owned and managed by local housing authorities, these provide rent based on income for low-income families and individuals. Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8): Provides rental assistance for low-income families to find apartments in the private market with rent capped based on income. Rental Assistance Programs: Inclusionary Zoning: Requires a certain percentage of affordable units in new developments. Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC): Tax credits given to developers to build or rehabilitate affordable rental housing. Homeownership Programs: Individual Development Accounts (IDAs): Matched savings accounts to help low-income families save for a down payment. Community Land Trusts (CLTs): Non-profits that sell homes at an affordable price while retaining ownership of the land, keeping housing costs down. These programs are considered progressive because they aim to address the root causes of unaffordable housing, such as low wages and lack of investment in low-income communities. They also promote housing options besides traditional ownership, recognizing the needs of renters as well. It's important to note that availability of these programs can vary by location.
