Highlighting yet another member of our ROCKSTAR team! Robert Todd is an experienced litigator specializing in labor relations representation and administrative appeals (among other things). Before entering the law field, he served as a law enforcement officer for the South Gate Police Department for 32 years, including 6 years as the Chief of Police. 👮 This gives him an experienced and unique perspective from which to serve. When we say that we understand the public safety sector, we truly mean it...because we've been there! 🚨 #DefendingThoseWhoProtectOthers #litigation #attorneyatlaw #publicsafety

Some reflections as I prepare a blog for tomorrow: Public perception is one of the most powerful forces shaping law enforcement today. A positive image can strengthen the impact of police work, while a negative one can erode trust and effectiveness. Building this trust goes beyond optics—it requires transparency, open communication, and a genuine commitment to serving the entire community, regardless of differing beliefs. When these values are prioritized, law enforcement and the community can work together to create a safer environment built on mutual respect. Your thoughts? #PublicPerception #LawEnforcement #Transparency #CommunityEngagement #LEC #BuildingTrust

We find great joy in educating aspiring lawyers. Recently, OIG attorney investigator T. Jack Morse, Jr. delivered an insightful presentation at the University of California, San Francisco School of Law on investigating excessive force claims against police. Jack's expertise, drawn from his DOJ background and experience as a neutral investigator, shed light on crucial accountability mechanisms for law enforcement agencies. A special thank you to Andrew L. for the invitation to speak to your students. #DOJInvestigations #WorkplaceInvestigations #OIGlaw

🚔 Is a Police Officer a Superhero or a Villain? 🤔 It’s a question that sparks strong emotions on both sides. For some, police officers are the everyday heroes protecting their communities, showing up during the worst moments, and risking their lives to keep others safe. 🦸♂️ For others, the image isn't so clear. Missteps, misunderstandings, or worse—abuse of power—can shift the narrative and cast doubt on the role of law enforcement. 💭 But here's the reality: officers are human, working within complex environments with ever-evolving challenges. Most of us joined the force to make a positive impact, to help others, and to ensure safety in our neighborhoods. We’re navigating that difficult balance every day. The truth lies somewhere in between. We’re not perfect, but the mission to serve and protect is what drives us. 💪 How do you view law enforcement’s role in today’s society? Let’s start an open dialogue—share your thoughts! 👇 #LawEnforcement #PublicSafety #Leadership #Community #Policing #ServeAndProtect #CopsGuideToWealth

This video featuring an interview with Michael Sierra-Arevalo discusses his new book “The Danger Imperative: Violence, Death, and the Soul of Policing.” It explores the origins of policing and how the historical frameworks around its institutional structures have not changed which often creates this environment of heightened tensions around policing within Black and Brown communities especially where the propensity for violence is often increased. In Michael’s research, he examines the culture of policing where there is a kind of cognitive dissonance. There is an emphasis on the survival of the police officers where in some instances it may in fact override public safety and this stems from the system itself where there it is ingrained in the officers that there is a risk that they may die from violence every time there is a confrontation, altercation, or even a suspicion of misconduct, illegal or criminal behavior. Michael also alludes to the fact that officers are protective of fellow officers because if they are perceived as not on the same side as their fellow officers or colleagues they may experience retaliation or risk ostracism. And while police forces are predominantly white, even with diversity, the institutional forces overtake those who work within the system.
