🌍 Welcome to the Public Health Innovation Lab (PHiL)! 🌍 At PHiL, we believe that integrating new and existing technologies will revolutionize public health. Sadly, many public health systems struggle to keep pace, resulting in significant consequences. 🚸 An estimated 4.2 million children under five die annually from preventable causes like pneumonia, diarrhea, and malnutrition. The public health-tech gap, reflected in poor data and inefficiencies, is a major factor. 📉 Despite tech advances, the gap widens due to a lack of coordination between the private and public sectors. PHiL aims to change that by modernizing public health. We unite technologists, data scientists, public health experts, policymakers, researchers, communities, and entrepreneurs to close this gap. 🤝 Join us as we explore tech innovation, host panel discussions, share job and internship opportunities in public health tech, and engage in conversations with leaders in the tech sector on public health. Together, we can bridge the gap and improve global health outcomes. 📢 Follow us for updates, insights, and opportunities! #PublicHealth #TechInHealth #Innovation #Healthcare #GlobalHealth #PHiL #HealthTech #TechInnovation #PanelDiscussions #JobOpportunities #Fellowships #Internships #MedTech #GlobalHealthInitiative #TechForGood #PublicHealthPolicy #PublicHealthInnovation

Hey LinkedIn Family! I just kicked off an exciting internship program this month, and the first lecture has set the bar high! The topic was "Reimagining Global Health Advocacy: Building Strong Advocates and Developments," and it was an eye-opener. I wanted to share some key takeaways with you all because this topic really opened my eyes to some critical and pressing issues that I hadn't fully considered before. We discussed the stark disparity between the Global North (high-income countries) and the Global South (low-income countries) in the realm of global health. Here are some points that really struck me: 1. Funding and Research Gaps: One key point that struck me was how the Global North often calls the shots when it comes to funding health initiatives for low-income countries. They not only provide the funds but also often control the research agendas. However, the irony is that these research institutes meant to address these health problems are often located miles, or even continents, away from the affected areas. This means the very people who need these solutions the most are not directly involved in the research process. 2. Misplaced Conferences: Another surprising fact was how conferences focusing on addressing health challenges in low-income countries are frequently hosted in high-income countries. Wouldn't it make more sense to hold these discussions where the issues are most prevalent? It feels like a missed opportunity for direct engagement and understanding. 3. Under representation in Decision Making: Lastly, there's a clear underrepresentation of health professionals from low-income countries in international organizations and decision-making tables. It’s baffling that those who experience these health challenges firsthand; those people who truly understand the ground realities, often don't have a seat at the table where crucial health decisions are made. As such they aren’t given a bigger voice in the solutions. These points and more really shed light on the deep-rooted inequities in global health, showing how much work we still have to do to create a more balanced and fair system. The fact that I hadn’t thought much about this disparity before the lecture speaks volumes about how much more there is to learn. This first lecture was an eye-opener, and it has set the tone for what I hope will be an incredibly enlightening internship. I'm excited to learn more and make the most of every opportunity this program provides. Looking forward to sharing more insights with you all as I continue this journey! #GlobalHealth #HealthEquity #InternshipExperience #LearningJourney #HealthAdvocacy

Great to visit Google yesterday to learn more about YouTube Health, as part of the NHS Summer Transformation Internship. Thank you Dr. Vishaal Virani, MBBS, for having us, and James Biggin-Lamming for setting this up! A few key takeaways - ℹ Access to information is a determinant of health 👉 People are spending a lot of time on YouTube 📐 YouTube uses a 'health shelf' (top banner of three videos) to promote content from trusted and credible sources The visit was also a reminder of how challenging it is for big tech to play in healthcare. Healthcare is fragmented, highly regulated, less agile, and less profitable than other sectors. For the NHS specifically - the gap in workforce digital skills makes it hard to adopt new products and practices. But the opportunity and potential is so great! 🚀
Thank you Dr. Vishaal Virani, MBBS for hosting the NHS Summer MBA intern cohort this evening to learn more about YouTube Health. It was a fascinating discussion about how to encourage, connect, promote and integrate high quality health information into improving care and empowering patients. Our NHS Summer MBA Intern programme has 16 people working across 11 London NHS organisations. Tonight was one of our guest speaker events to hear more about careers and opportunities in healthcare.

The Healthcare Workforce Report published by Reach Out and the collaboration of public health departments, universities and other organizations (the Inland Health Professions Consortium) illustrated some key points that will have broad impacts on healthcare in the Inland Empire. For one thing--and this is good news on many levels--the career opportunities for those with undergraduate and graduate degrees are expanded significantly. The challenge now is to ensure we have people to take those positions, and that means investing in pathways and internships that move students from high school into the career fields that will have the most impacts on our region in the public health arena. #HealthcareWorkforce #PublicHealth #InlandEmpire
