𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀  A new report by public health expert Sir Michael Marmot reveals how language barriers and racism are widening healthcare inequality. With over 300 languages spoken in London and 355,000 residents not speaking English well or at all, many face serious challenges accessing care.     The Structural Racism, Ethnicity and Health Inequalities in London report notes that lack of adequate interpreting services in the NHS often leaves families and friends to shoulder the burden of translation, which can lead to harmful misinterpretations and compromised care. This can result in inappropriate medical testing, increased hospitalisation rates, and mistrust in services.     However, there is hope. Health literacy is a human rights concern and the Italian government is taking a lead to face this challenge. Today, The Commonwealth Fund and Senior Harkness Fellows led a workshop EUPHA - European Public Health Association’s #EPH2024 exploring health inequities from geography, income, race, disability, and gender perspectives in different country contexts. These disparities have lead to poorer health outcomes and reduced life expectancy for many marginalized communities. Drawing from international experiences, the workshop shared effective systems-level and community-based strategies to address these disparities and enhance justice and healthcare accessibility in different countries despite persistent challenges. #PublicHealth #HealthPolicy #HealthJustice

NACCHO CEO Pat Turner points out that Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations receives 62% less than mainstream health providers, yet the community sector has far more the complex case loads. 2.8 x more funding is required to meet community needs. NACCHO is calling for needs based funding and for $4.4 billion funding required to close the indigenous health funding gap. This is a seminal reform to end the ad hoc approaches of the past, and required in the wake of the failure of the referendum and ongoing disinformation about Aboriginal rights. Funding needs to be a bipartisan commitment to Close the Gap.

Did you know that only 20% of a person’s health is impacted by what happens in the clinic? The other 80% is shaped by social determinants—things like access to clean water, nutritious food, stable housing, and a safe environment. For many migrant families, these essentials are out of reach. Constant movement, language barriers, fear of deportation, and lack of resources create significant health challenges. Healthcare professionals have a responsibility to advocate for equitable access to these basic needs, because true health equity means addressing the broader systems that impact well-being. An example of Colonized Terminology in Social Work and Public Health… Minority Health Underserved Minority Marginalized We in this field continue to focus on health equality but continue to use Colonized Terminology such as those above. To make change we need to change language. To say this is the only way grants can be written…by using these terms, then change the Grant Criteria. Again are you “Falling in Line” and using colonized systems?
