The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence begins today, running from the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (Nov. 25) to Human Rights Day (Dec. 10). #25N
According to UN Women's Gender Equality 2024 Report::
-> Countries with domestic violence legislation report significantly lower rates of intimate partner violence (9.5%) compared to those without such legislation (16.1%).
-> Despite progress, 1 in 8 women and girls (aged 15-49) experienced sexual and/or physical violence by an intimate partner in the past year.
-> Legal Definitions of Rape: A staggering 54% of countries still do not base their legal definition of rape on the lack of freely given consent.
-> Child marriage: 18.7% of women aged 20-24 were married before age 18, a decrease from 24.1% in 2003. However, at the current rate, child marriage won’t end until 2092
-> Migrant women and girls are at major risk of gender-based violence and trafficking: in 2020, 64% of detected victims of trafficking were women, with girls accounting for another 27%.
-> 85% of women online either witness or experience harassment and other forms of violence in digital spaces.
-> The ongoing conflicts place women and girls in heightened danger of violence, trafficking, and exploitation.
