Cassava is one of Thailand’s most important crops for over 500,000 smallholder farming households. Thailand is the seller of most cassava in the world for animal feeds, consumption, and raw materials. Quinoa farming is deeply rooted in the Andean region, particularly in smallholder farming communities in Peru where #quinoa cultivation is an ancestral tradition passed down from one generation to another. Over the last decade, Peru has become the world's leading producer and exporter of quinoa, and the growth in global quinoa trade has had a positive impact on the welfare of smallholder quinoa farmers. However, that was short-lived. Nowadays, farmers with no cultural link to the crop but with access to more capital, technology, credit, and geographical advantage, are outcompeting the small Andean farmers. Olam Agri has partnered with USAID in a 5-year project that aims to enhance the livelihoods of 700 organic smallholder quinoa farmers in Apurimac, Ayacucho and Puno. We are supporting farmers to improve productivity, crop quality, and access to premium markets through an organic certification. We are also carrying out a series of instructional trainings in nutrition, screening children for anaemia and implementing vegetable gardens with the aim of improving health and food security in the quinoa farming communities. https://lnkd.in/g977WUUe Biswajeet Singh Marisol Escobar
