🌄 Did you know that the UK has seen its woodland area grow from 7% in 1965 to 13% in 2023? This isn't just good news for our landscapes; it's a major win for our natural capital too! 🌲 Recent calculations from the Office for National Statistics show that the asset value of UK woodlands hit an impressive £382 billion in 2021. While timber and woodfuel may get all the spotlight, they only make up 3.9% (£14.8 billion) of that value. The real MVP? 🌍 Greenhouse gas regulating services, taking the crown with a whopping 39% (£150 billion) of the total asset value. Talk about trees doing the heavy lifting! 🌳 But wait, there's more! The annual value of UK woodlands ecosystem services was a solid £10 billion in 2021. And get this—the non-timber benefits alone (also £10 billion) outshine timber and woodfuel market benefits (£441 million) by a staggering 23 times. It's not just about the numbers though. In 2022, an estimated 3.2 million people reaped health benefits from woodland recreation, valued at £1 billion annually. That's a lot of happy, healthy forest wanderers! We're thrilled to see the tangible benefits of investing in natural capital. Let's keep nurturing our woodlands—they're worth every penny! #NaturalCapital #Woodlands #GreenGrowth #SustainableFuture #HealthBenefits #EnvironmentalImpact #NatureFinancing

In my latest publication I propose some ideas for dealing with the fiscal cost of climate-related disasters in a structured way. Such an approach would enable national authorities to answer questions such as: “Is my country prepared to deal with the fiscal costs of disasters? Where are the gaps? What can be improved and how?”. https://lnkd.in/eYq2cMf2
