"For small news organizations, whether new or established, having an intern on hand sounds tempting. But for editors stretched thin covering a community alone or with tiny staffs, is the effort worth it? On balance, the editors and publishers interviewed for this project said yes. Not only can an intern expand coverage, but also, training the next generation of reporters satisfies the mission, whether articulated or unspoken, of many newsroom leaders. Our target audience for this handbook includes editors of both place-based newsrooms and news organizations that cover topics such as criminal justice or climate. This handbook, designed specifically to meet the needs of small-newsroom managers, is the first of its kind. " https://lnkd.in/gARPNBtV

Thought I would share this "And Now For Some Fun" segment of my recent email newsletter: If you know me personally, you know how much I love a great story. I'm a big fan of Korean dramas because they take their time to let a story unfold and to develop the characters, and they don't go on endlessly for season after season. So I thought it would be fun to offer a finance-related recommendation for your watching pleasure! Misaeng: An Incomplete Life is a 16-episode series available on Netflix. It tells the story of Jang Geu Rae, (played to perfection by Im Si Wan), a Go player who had to drop out of professional competition because of his father's death and his family's poverty. He's starting over at 26, having never attended school because of Go training. Geu Rae gets an internship in a big trading company through a connection, and his superiors and internship cohort of top-notch university grads spurn him because of his lack of credentials. Through over-the-top hard work, reliance on lessons learned playing Go, and a brilliant, out-of-the-box way of thinking, he eventually wins the love and respect of his team of coworkers and the three other interns who made it through the process to get hired. But the cards are stacked against him as a temporary worker without a college degree. The drama is finance-related because it's about poverty, opportunity, work, and more. It shows the maddening misogyny in the Korean workplace, the inflexibility of corporate hierarchy, and other ills of capitalism - while also showing humanity and love (not romantic) in the workplace. It's certainly different than work in America, but a lot of the themes and messages are the same. Misaeng is a slow build, but well worth the watch. It has a life-is-hard vibe and almost every episode made me cry. If you watch it, let me know what you think (link is in comments)! And if you want to receive my monthly newsletter with personal finance information and tips (and occasional fun), let me know!

Ready to start your career in Broadcast Production? Where you get your start matters. College helps you build your skills and gives you a taste of what some of the functions of a newsroom might be, but that is not the end of your education. Your first station give you a palpable taste of what the world of Broadcast has to offer. I cannot begin to count the amount of times I hear that the path someone is on wasn't what they thought it was going to be out of college. They also say that it is also better then they imagined. I myself found I have a larger passion for the newsroom rather then the production booth. I would have never known that if it wasn't for my first station. I write this because you need to take your first step so you can really see the path you were meant to be on. You need to learn what is out their for someone with a passion to continue learning and never let anyone stop you from finding your future. Don't be afraid to take a chance, make a move, and start your life finding what you love. https://lnkd.in/g4Ei4z-e
