This is solid. I think for me, I would add my own 2nd dimension. I think being a Generalist defines me better, because I want to dabble in “it all,” not just a specific UX area. I like to tinker, and in the tinkering is the joy of growing. However, the 2nd dimension for me would be of industry. There are countless industries out there - healthcare, finance, insurance, education - the list is infinite. For me, this is where I flip to specialist. My specialty is the industry of motorsports. Perhaps broader-thinking is “sports and entertainment.” In my mind, motorsports is on an upward swing. I feel it. I know it. Across the board. But, sometimes, the “UX” of the sport can be sooooo frustrating, not just to myself, but also to fans and consumers, our teams, our drivers, our partners, our race/track promoters, our suppliers. Unfortunately, time and time again, it gets “lost” in the bottom lines and sport survival. Good UX is obvious. Great UX is transparent. Perhaps that’s where it gets “lost” in the C-Suite & leadership. Example from this week: internally, I was brought a nuisance by a news article editor. With a simple UX/IA change, I made our entire editorial team more efficient, and they were giddy. Ten minutes, one test subject, happy internal team. The fans won’t see that change, but our team will. I know I am not alone in this thought, but motorsports, holistically, is ripe with UX opportunities. INDYCAR, NASCAR, FIA, F1, USAC, WEC, IMSA. It’s a bumper crop! That’s my fight. It is more that what I do, it is truly more who I am. Now time to take the fight to those who will listen. I am mostly a UX Generalist, specializing in motorsports. Green flag! Race on!
Should you strive to be a UX specialist or a UX generalist? Well like everything in UX - It Depends! Truly there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Both paths offer unique benefits, and each plays a critical role in a well-rounded UX team. 🔍 Generalists offer a wide view among UX problems and can connect the dots across multiple UX domains. This is great for someone who loves being exposed to different problems, opportunities, and experiences. But, the downside? Others might misunderstand your role as a “do-it-all” function. If that’s the case, you might also like our course, The One-Person UX team: https://bit.ly/3YNNoAT 🎯 Specialists often focus deeply on one area like UX writing, qualitative research, or coding. Specialists deep dive into one specific area and tend to focus on a more narrow set of activities. However, there’s a risk of getting pigeonholed into one type of work. Now, whether you’re a generalist or specialist, focus on what brings you joy and value to your team. Most UX careers start broad, but over time, you can refine your focus based on your strengths and interests. For designers in the UX world, this an opportunity not to be missed. Mark is a thought leader in systemic design, with a rich history in UX in both private and public contexts. I've had the privilege of knowing Mark for years and have always admired how generously he shares his practice. I've got serious FOMO for missing out on this one. #ux #uxdesign #yeg #design #uidesign #webdesign

As an unexperienced UX designer I seek feedback whenever I can. 🔍 It pushes me to be better, to discover new sollutions and trends. 📈 Recently, a fellow designer suggested leveling up my UI skills with a daily UI challenge. So that’s what I’ll be doing (and you’ll be seeing on my Linkedin) from now on. Sorry, not sorry. Day 1: Sign up page How do you think I did? 👩🏻🎨 #dailyUI #day1 #signup

Great post by NNGROUP: here's from one generalist to another, it's best to be honest about this to yourself and plan your career accordingly. In my experience there are more career opportunities to the generalists but on the downside, they are also the people more likely to have less job security.

Ever wondered why you love a certain product so much? 🤔 It’s not just about its features or looks. It’s about the feel of it. That’s where emotional design comes in. 😎 Think of a favorite childhood toy. Remember the joy, the excitement, the feeling of amazement it brought? That’s emotional design in action! 😍 As a UX designer, I aim to create products that evoke these positive emotions. 👀 This is about understanding our users’ needs, desires, and pain points, and designing experiences that resonate with them on a deep level.
