The Raikes Journal published an inspiring short story on Friday's edition, alongside the lead story you can see leading things linked below. The story is the latest installment in the efforts being made to raise £17.5 million for a new oncology centre for Gloucestershire in Cheltenham - what is billed as the Big Space Cancer Care Appeal. When the edition was emailed out to Raikes subscribers at the end of last week we'd just heard where £2 million of the £8.5 million already raised came from and wanted to share it. But what really inspired us was the incredible effort by two brothers from the county who watched the video featuring Anoushka Duroe-Richards (by Moss Davis of Gloucestershire-based Singularity Film) and were so moved they went on to raise several thousand towards the cause. Take a bow Clive and Dave Organ, 60 and 61 respectively. The pair cycled more than 1,600km from Land’s End to John O’ Groats, and climbed Mount Snowdon while on the trip as well! The main story - about the hotel sale - is a snippet of news I heard from Superdry-founder Julian Dunkerton and wanted to see what was afoot. Just why had the owner had put the hotel up for sale? It’s no secret that hospitality is difficult for many at the moment, but was that the reason? Was there a buyer in the frame? What would it mean for the adjoining restaurant, Brasserie Blanc Cheltenham, and were rumours that the hotel was looking elsewhere in Gloucestershire true? So many questions. We’re talking about The Queen’s Hotel,of course. The answers to all those questions are in the story. Events management courses introduce students to planning and managing events, with events delivered as experiential learning opportunities during courses. Here is an example from our member, University of Chester Business School, where funds were also raised for charity. #events #management #education #students #experience #experientiallearning

Today, I noticed that the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities announced a few different funding awards: - £20m for a new leisure and cultural hub in Farnborough, Surrey; - £18m for Partington Sports Village, Manchester (operated by Trafford Leisure - a Community Interest Company); - £20m for an Outdoor Sports Centre in Southampton (operated by Active Nation - a charitable company); and - £7.7m for three projects across Camden, including Talacre Community Sports Centre (operated by Better, a charitable registered society). The awards were made under the second round of the Levelling Up Fund. Two things stand out to me about these awards: - first, they recognise the crucial importance that local sports and leisure facilities provide in communities, and the chasm in access to such facilities that exists across the UK; and - second, each of the three established sports/leisure operators funded above is a different type of non-commercial entity - one is a CIC, another a charitable company, and another a charitable registered society. This shows not only the importance of non-commercial entities in the world of grassroots sport (in particular in accessing public funding) but also the diversity of legal forms available for organisations operating in that world. https://lnkd.in/euYa_BXv https://lnkd.in/e9D5jmRG https://lnkd.in/ezQ2Tcf7 https://lnkd.in/e3mY8rAf

What a treat to hear from National Active Travel Commissioner Chris Boardman CBE for our 100th episode! 🙌 Chris was as candid and clear as ever - here are a few highlights from his session with us - including a startling piece of new data highlighting why standards such as LTN1/20 are so important. Chris shared:- - How the new Government’s new Mission-based approach could be the turning point for Active Travel, putting it at the heart of the Gov’s new Integrated Transport Strategy, which his colleague and Danny Williams has just been asked to lead - How seeing Active Travel through the lens of health is essential - (‘without health there is no growth’) - which may mean focusing resources where walking and cycling interventions can enable those who are currently inactive to be active - Why this might mean ensuring more activation/ behavior change schemes, alongside the ‘tarmac’ schemes, in those areas - That this new Mission-based approach also includes reviewing the formula for how all transport schemes are assessed - to hopefully get away from the ‘mythical metric’ of ‘minutes of car journey time saved’ resulting in prioritising roads - and instead moving to metrics such as health outcomes which will favour of active travel schemes due to their positive health impacts - Why greater devolution is an opportunity but also a threat unless standards are adopted - that Active Travel England have data from a study of 100+ schemes that shows that ‘old fashioned schemes’ (ie ones comprising of just paint) will ‘kill 10% more people than doing nothing and get no uptake in cycling rates’ whereas LTN1/20 schemes will get ‘between 20-60% more uptake and halve the number of deaths’ - ‘that’s pretty powerful stuff’ - How he learnt in his role Greater Manchester how important it was to understand councils capability, not just their ambition - and how this paved the way for the Capability Rankings in use by Active Travel England today to help councils understand ability to deliver - His plea for the absolutely vital role of winning hearts and minds - both in the general public and among local politicians - and how this was built not on citing data but talking about the things that matter to people - eg their children’s freedom, walking to the shops safely. - That Pavement Parking was ‘not in his gift’ but that ‘having sat on a minster’s desk for four years it is now at last being considered carefully and properly’ All that and much more!! You can listen for yourself - as the recording will be up soon on our website at activetravelcafe.org.uk, where you can also sign up for future sessions.
Zoom in, 5pm Tuesdays!
