If you're interested in a particular role or job, it's natural to become curious about what the position entails, how you fit into it, and what the opportunities for growth and development are. Asking the right questions during the hiring process can help satisfy your curiosity and determine if the role is a good fit for you. Here are some select questions you could ask: What does a typical day look like in this role? What are the most important qualities and skills for someone to succeed in this role? How does this role fit into the overall goals and mission of the company? What are the biggest challenges that someone in this role may face? What opportunities are there for professional development and advancement? How is performance evaluated and measured in this role? Can you tell me more about the company culture and how this role fits into it? What is the management style like for this role? Can you give me an example of a project or problem that someone in this role would tackle? Are there any specific goals or initiatives that the company is focusing on right now that impact this role? A careers site is the one of the most important windows into your organisation. Whether it's your internal or external site - you want to show your colleagues or your candidates the art of possible. Whether that’s your next internal step, or your next new role or challenge. That’s why, over the past few months we have been squirrelling away, reshaping both our internal and external careers sites. Why we wanted to ensure our internal candidate experience was as important as our external candidate experience. A business runs with people. And a successful business runs with the right people. It has been a huge programme to deliver, and of course no programme of work actually works without a whole bunch of people behind the scenes to make it happen. Every day really was a learning day, and it was amazing to be able to collaborate with so colleagues across the business, both those who shared their expertise for us to deliver these sites and so many colleagues who gave us insight into their area so we could bring it to life. And of course our agency support who took our vision and turned it into reality. There are so many people to thank but the biggest shout out goes to these guys, for their expertise, guidance, helping in navigating inevitable bumps and hurdles and most of all support. Without a great team, we wouldn't have two brilliant websites. I admire reaching to new heights and having aspirations. Truly. Ha, you know a however is coming, don’t you. HOWEVER, when you are reading a job description, please please please possess most of the skills that are required. Case in point, I was recruiting for a full-service hotel General Manager position. I received a resume from someone that is a professional belly dancer. Atta girl! I couldn’t do this, nor would anyone want to see me shake and shimmer. Point being, read the job description and please do not apply if you are not qualified. Now, for all of you who are looking for roles and reading said job descriptions – I have this to say to employers. Write a decent job description! Be open to those without degrees but whom have stellar experience. Post the salary. Get rid of the damn ATS. We all hate it, and we all look for ways around it. It doesn’t take long to read a resume. Yes, it’s time consuming, but I have found some amazing people by keeping an open mind and listening to candidates. Rant over. Let’s all do better. And no, this is definitely not a picture of me. I've been on the hiring side for various roles in the social media and PR sector for years. It's always a tug of war between recruiting experienced professionals who can hit the ground running, and fresh, eager-to-learn juniors. It's a classic conundrum.😄 Go for seniority, and you're bringing in expertise and skill, ready to tackle the challenges head-on. However, it comes with a hefty price tag.💰 Choose the junior route, you may save on the initial investment, but does more training mean more cost in the long run? However, the upside? You get to shape them into your work culture, and they have the potential to grow with your company.🌱 Each choice with its own perks and pitfalls. But isn't that the beauty of it?
