Geopolitical risk is across every media outlet. It's no secret there's multiple wars going on in the world right now. The latest is in the Middle East, and I don't want to minimize the humanitarian impact on people's lives. I know that's very real or is a ugly and tragic thing. What we're looking at today is the market reaction after geopolitical events. So we go back to 1940 and track S&P returns one month, three months, six months and 12 months after a geopolitical event and. On average, across the board future returns in the short term. Tend to be lower, however. Each individual event. The returns are all over the place. Which makes it really hard to trade a geopolitical event. And it goes back to what I've said in previous blog posts. What often derails markets or get people worked up is seldom what folks are talking about. So we provide some empirical evidence. We itemize every single geopolitical event since 1940. And my overarching take away is if you're freaking out over a a war or a geopolitical event, you're probably taking too much. Risk. Geopolitical Events v Tax Day & Velocity of Rate Rises - history would strongly indicate that the small and perfectly normal pullback last week is probably due to the later mix. Geopolitical events, beyond the short-term, are counter-intuitively rarely the reason that markets are derailed.
