DRAGONS’ DEN. On Sunday I took the opportunity to watch some past episodes of the UK show “DRAGONS’ DEN”. It’s where small business owners present their products and ask for an investment with accompanying business contacts, management and coaching guidance. Some takeaways for me: 1. So many decisions were made emotionally. If the Dragon liked the presenter there was a better chance of the investment being given. We don’t separate our feelings on the product from our feelings on the person. People buy from people. 2. Know your financials. Sales past and predicted were fine but some failed because they did not know what constituted their COGS and how EDITDA was arrived at. Many’s the time I’ve helped SMEs/SMBs owners to avert being a failing business through costs management, pricing differentials and strategy. 3. Know your distribution channels, routes to market and contribution of each. 4. Negotiate. Some of the budding entrepreneurs were able to get not just one but three Dragons by asking and suggesting that they share the investment and percentages between them. 5. The ones that won the hearts of the Dragons were full of emotion based on sound preparation and delivery. When presenting and selling the value of you and your products and services it’s important to use the three E’s – Enlighten, Entertain and Empower.
