The re-election of Ursula von der Leyen as Commission President brings the EU's commitment to the biotech revolution one step closer to reality. At EuropaBio - the European Association for Bioindustries, we will continue to work closely with our members to deliver on this agenda. The proposal for an EU Biotech Act in 2025 is welcomed to ensure the EU can deliver on its ambitions for the EU biotech and biomanufacturing industries. As we look to the future, we should not forget all relevant EU legislations need to be fit for biotech. With biotech increasingly the primary source of new medicines, the EU General Pharmaceutical Legislation (GPL) is a key file to put R&D, science, and technology at the centre of Europe's economy. It is an opportunity to improve on the current framework and give the EU the effective tools to once again be an innovation leader and secure faster access to breakthrough therapies for the European patients. The proper implementation of the Clinical Trials Regulation, the EU HTA Regulation, the European Health Data Space, as well as other sectoral legislations impacting the health biotech industries will also be decisive. The EU’s strong innovation base and existing biotechnology capacity place it in a powerful and promising position to emerge as a global leader. Europe’s biotechnology & biomanufacturing future starts today.

Belgium's biotech/biopharma industry excels through collaboration and innovation in a vibrant ecosystem. The sector's prosperity is fueled by robust public support, renowned universities, a skilled workforce, and advantageous geography. Both Flanders and Wallonia have different key hubs with diverse specializations, propelling the industry forward. 🧬 This week, EuropaBio - the European Association for Bioindustries held its Council and Board meetings — an inspiring moment to reflect on 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡'𝐬 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 in the EU and to chart the path forward for the #biotech 𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚 𝐭𝐨 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟗. 🧬 Together with our National Associations and Healthcare Councils, we: 🔵 Reviewed progress on the Pharma Package negotiations and critical actions from national biotech associations — ensuring it works for biotech. 🔵 Aligned on ambitions for the EU #BiotechAct and other transformative initiatives like the Life Sciences Strategy and the EU Innovation Act. The big picture? Biotech is now firmly anchored into the EU’s strategic priorities. It’s recognised as a 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 — essential for Europe’s future competitiveness and prosperity. The March 2024 Communication on Boosting Biotech & Biomanufacturing in the EU gives us a 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐦𝐚𝐩 to shape this industry for future generations. But the work doesn’t stop here. Fo 2024-2029, we face a 𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲 𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚 with over 20 relevant initiatives. Each one is a chance to strengthen our biotech ecosystem and deliver on the EU’s transitions, competitiveness, and prosperity.
