Tackling the climate crisis will require global collaboration on an unprecedented scale. However, at a local level, you can help to mitigate the impact of climate change on your customers and team members. By investing in precise energy flow modelling and HVAC specification determination, you can ensure that each of your premises features a HVAC solution that is energy-efficient, compatible with your sustainability goals and which delivers improved ambient temperatures, enhanced air quality and a more comfortable environment. At Q-Mech Consulting Engineers, we specialise in devising solutions that can help you counter the effects of rising temperatures. As buildings grow more energy-efficient, the upfront carbon cost of materials becomes proportionally more important. Anyone that’s worked on decarbonisation projects knows that it’s not easy to solve. Higher costs of low-carbon materials, lack of expertise, and few incentives make it a hard problem to tackle. What’s worse: sometimes it’s hard to even measure the initial embodied carbon of our projects. It’s like steering in the dark. Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are the core of data availability for embodied carbon. Some years ago, they were hard to get by in the construction sector. But they’ve been steadily growing and reached over 16000 at the start of 2023. This is great news: if we have more capability to measure the impact of our choices, the paths to decarbonisation multiply. And EPD growth doesn’t seem like it will stop any time soon. Click the link in the comments to explore how each country fares in data availability through EPDs. [source: eco-platform] #embodiedcarbon #epd #decarbonisation

An #epd (Environmental Product Declaration) is the first step and essential to understanding the embodied impact of a material. An EPD does not evaluate how good is a material, it is only a declaration. The next step is to map the hot spots in different stages of the material life cycle and minimize them. Also, EPD is available for more and more industrial products, but not much for local vernacular products, although an exciting study on that topic is being developed in Portugal.

𝗜𝗫𝗢 𝗜𝗡𝗦𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧𝗦 | New SBTi Building Sector Guidance 📝 ❇ Our latest 'IXO Insights' looks at the draft building guideline proposed by SBTi. Are your assets and portfolio #ready with a #responseplan? Science Based Targets initiative (#SBTi) unveiled their draft guidelines for the building sector in December 2023. These #newguidelines are tilted at demonstrating much higher (~>50% reduction) in upfront embodied carbon emissions by 2030 compared to reduction targets under prior, 2˚C-aligned, targets (~20-25%). This represents a significant #industry #stepchange, of the likes we have not seen since the Industrial Revolution. These kinds of targets cannot be achieved with green technology alone, or downstream design optimization alone, or material replacement alone, or upgraded/retro-commissioned plant alone. #Pilottesting is currently underway with conclusions expected to be published this year. ❇ Do you need a partner to co-develop a practical and rapid response for your building or portfolio to #stayahead of the market? UK Green Building Council (UKGBC)’s ‘Embodied Carbon: Scope 3 Measurement and Reporting’ seeks to align organisational GHG Scope 3 reporting and project-based embodied carbon assessments to show how establishing a coherent link can support emissions reductions efforts. The guidance demonstrates that integrating embodied carbon assessments directly within Scope 3 reporting would represent an easier, more centralised and more detailed solution than typical practices for GHG Protocol reporting. To do so, the report outlines guidance for various stakeholders: How Developers, Owners, Contractors, Facilities Managers can use embodied carbon assessments to report Scope 3 emissions across an asset’s lifetime, How Architects and Engineers should adopt a project-based emissions disclosure for embodied carbon, due to the challenge of designing embodied carbon emissions that do not easily fit within the GHG Protocol. On Thursday 26th September 2024 we invited M&E’s from across London to join Mitsubishi Electric at the Building Centre to discuss how we can work together to decarbonise the existing London building stock. The group heard from Rt. Hon the Lord Deben, highlighting the impact global warming has had over the last few years and the devastating consequences we will face if we don't act now. We also heard from Mitsubishi Electric's Zero Carbon Design Manager, Chris Newman who addressed the importance of retrofitting our built environment if we are to meet our 2050 targets. We have a number of resources available to help navigate the road to Net Zero including our latest whitepaper, 'HVAC Retrofit - Considerations for Commercial Buildings: Setting the Stage for Efficiency and Sustainability'. This guide is aimed at helping both building owners and contractors understand the key principals of retrofitting.
