Laura Gorman and I attended an excellent event yesterdayhosted by the Oxford-Cambridge Supercluster Board and sponsored by Bidwells (and others) and it reminded me that despite its many problems the UK has much to be proud about. Three comments I took away - 1. Andrew Williamson (Cambridge Innovation Capital) pointed out that as a nation we fail to celebrate success.  There are things being developed in Oxford and Cambridge that have the potential to change the future of mankind.   2. Andrew Griffith (minister for state for science innovation and technology) pointed out that we cannot have innovation without a willingness to take risk, reminding us that the early explorers set off in boats thinking the world was flat! 3. The Oxford/Cambridge supercluster ranks amongst the best in the world and there are huge benefits being located in a cluster such as Harwell Science and Innovation Campus or ARC | Advanced Research Clusters because collaboration is key. We need to accept that failure is part of the natural journey to success, build on what we already have and remind everyone that there is still “Great” in Britain. 

IEDC Annual Conference had an incredible turn out with over 1,500 economic developers in attendance! Honored to have been invited to present on the exciting the new partnership between NAR Commercial and the International Economic Development Council! A big shout out to all of the staff and volunteers that make events like these possible! Working with the team at Aurecon on the development of our new strategic partnership has been incredibly rewarding. Since 2022, we have used our combined resources and expertise, to explore how artificial intelligence can improve health, climate change, sustainability, and resilience outcomes.   Our collaboration demonstrates how universities and industry can proactively shape the future. We’ve already seen promising results, including the development of the Carbon Sketcher tool by one of our bright PhD students, Juliana Croffi Calixto, a $200k Circular Economy Development Grant, which will examine a SA Water PVC pipe recycling scheme. We have also hosted a thought leadership dinner focused on the next 150 years of AI and the digitisation of health, featuring key senior leaders from the government, Aurecon, and the University of Adelaide. Furthermore, Aurecon will join us on our August Senior Executive Mission to discuss their expansions in SE Asia and explore joint training and global engagement opportunities.   In June 2024, we signed an MoU that formalises our relationship. To celebrate, we produced a video to highlight the breadth of our future-focussed collaboration. Research and innovation at Niagara College: Solutions for industry Through applied research and innovation transfer activities, the team at Niagara College provides real-world solutions for businesses, key industry sectors, and the community. Let’s work together We have three potential ways you can engage with us. First, we can collaborate on an applied research project. Funding sources cover most project costs, including labour, materials, and administration, with a 1:1 match from an outside industry partner (combination of cash and in-kind contribution). We take on the administrative legwork, so the industry partner doesn’t have to apply for or secure their own funding. Industry partners must meet funding criteria to qualify (often 2+2 model in years in business plus number of employees). As a property student doing rudimentary research on sustainable development, I'm genuinely impressed by the private sector's deliberate efforts to promote efficiency in the built environment. It's great to see exemplary incentives from industry leaders like Growthpoint Properties, looking to source talent that's on the cutting edge of innovation. Another fresh example that springs to mind is the Valuation 20 (V20): Summit and Conference to be held in Brazil at the end of September this year, which is also calling for research papers themed around "Valuation and Sustainability for Inclusive Growth". It seems to me that this is what large-scale adaptation looks like in real time, and I'm excited to be part of it as I prepare to transition into the professional space.
