To this group I would add office building owners regarding occupancy and economists and corporate executives who argue about productivity. What a year it’s been at the PSC! 🙌 We’re excited to announce that the Public Sector Commission's annual report for 2023–24 was officially tabled in Queensland parliament last week!   This report not only highlights our performance and financial statements but also celebrates the incredible value our people bring and identifies opportunities for growth.   Reflecting on the past year, we’re particularly proud of: • launching and deploying our Even better public sector for Queensland strategy 2024–2028 to enhance service delivery and to deliver an even better public sector • implementing initiatives that promote workforce diversity and inclusion, including our Queensland public sector LGBTIQ+ action plan 2023–2025 • revamping our workforce data and insights through the new and transparent State of the sector report 2024. We have further remained committed to strengthening relationships with Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples, including through our Reframing the relationship plan, and embedding legislative changes from the Public Sector Act 2022 through supporting directives and resources.   While we celebrate these achievements, we also acknowledged the ongoing challenges, including in public sector recruitment and retention which we are dedicated to addressing through strategic workforce planning.   A heartfelt thank you to our stakeholders and the Queensland public sector workforce for your collaboration. Bennett researchers Lucy Hampton and Ayantola Alayande question how public sector productivity is currently measured in the same way as private sector productivity as this could lead to a narrow focus on budget efficiency and organisational productivity (i.e. ‘doing things right’) at the exclusion of effectiveness (‘doing the right thing’). "The great thing is that they don’t require additional funding. All they require is a change in approach." Traditional, siloed approach to public services cannot solve today’s complex challenges. We need to rethink how we allocate public funds to create person-centred solutions. Grace Duffy from Bridges Outcomes Partnerships lays out three shifts in public spending that can help us achieve this. 1️⃣ **Liberate Front Line Teams: From Inputs to Shared Outcomes**   Instead of narrowly focusing on inputs, we need to empower frontline teams to deliver personalised support based on shared goals and outcomes. Giving staff the flexibility to tailor services improves not only their effectiveness, but also the sustainability of the results. 2️⃣ **Invest in Prevention: From Annual Budgets to Long-Term Prevention**   Rigid, yearly budgets limit the potential of preventative services. By providing multi-year, flexible funding, local authorities can focus on long-term solutions that reduce demand and foster resilience. 3️⃣ **Effective Funding Partnerships: From Siloed Pots to Holistic, Co-Commissioned Services**   Complex societal issues don’t fit neatly into departmental silos. Aligning central and local government funding streams allows us to create more strategic, holistic solutions for the communities most in need. Chancellor Rachel Reeves has unveiled a major "Get Britain Working" initiative aimed at tackling the UK’s persistently high economic inactivity rates 📈. The UK stands out among G7 nations as the only country with higher economic inactivity compared to pre-pandemic levels. Key points include: ● A £240 million investment to assist 2.8 million individuals currently out of work due to long-term sickness in returning to employment. ● A new local "trailblazers" programme designed to streamline work, health, and skills support 🛠️. ● A focus on reaching individuals who are not currently engaged with the system. ● A White Paper outlining further reforms expected later this autumn. CIPD welcomes the initiative but emphasises the need for effective employer engagement to ensure sustainable employment outcomes🌱.
