A microscopic diving board can cheat the second law of thermodynamics Not all diving boards obey the laws of thermodynamicsvm/Getty Images A microscopic version of a diving board has been driven to cheat the second law of thermodynamics 95 per cent of the time. The finding doesn’t challenge the validity of the law, but underscores how different the rules of the microscopic world can be. The behaviour of our world is constrained by this physical law. Among other things, it sets the minimum energy expended for changing the state of something, ... Read more here: https://lnkd.in/d38qVA3u . . Why is underwater kicking so effective? Resistance is lower under the surface of the water. What’s the easiest way for swimmers to go slower under the water? Use terrible streamline and alignment. The same rules apply. To go fast underwater, swimmers have to keep resistance as low as possible. To help swimmers learn to keep resistance low underwater, I like to use different activities that help them FEEL how much resistance they’re creating. I have them play with different kicking amplitudes. I have the kick with the arms by their side, across their chest, or behind their head. I have to wear resistance. The more they can learn to FEEL resistance, the more they can learn to change it. Great alignment starts with great stability underwater. For more on how to make help swimmers create stability, check out the free resource below. www.underwaterkicking.com

This book provides a fun introduction to the mathematics and physics needed to really understand scuba diving; it was written by an enthusiastic scuba diver, who is also a mathematician. The book is written for the lay person, and assumes only a willingness to express basic scientific relationships using mathematical equations. #thescubanews #PhysicsofScubaDiving
