In the spirit of #NationalRoadSafetyWeek, we previously introduced one of our personas, Abby, and explored what makes her feel safe when walking to school. While safety isn't one-size-fits-all, there are universal elements, such as formalised pedestrian crossings, that enhance road safety in general. Another crucial element in ensuring safety for Abby and others on their way to school are the yellow lines painted along the edge of the road. Do you know how yellow lines around schools keep kids safe? Check out this informative video by Prue Oswin for a detailed explanation. Throughout this month, we'll continue to explore and share insights on how safety is perceived by some of our personas and how this helps us plan safe active transport networks for all. Back-to-school safety tip #2: If your child walks or bikes to school, help them plan safe routes that minimize exposure to busy roads and dangerous intersections. Practice the route together until they are comfortable navigating it independently. Remind them to wait in well-lit areas, cross streets at designated crosswalks, and avoid distractions like headphones while walking near traffic. #BackToSchool #SchoolSafety https://hubs.ly/Q02Lzx4C0

Back-to-school also means thinking about getting kids to and from school safely, particularly if they walk or ride their bikes. Far too many kids are injured or killed simply on their commutes to and from school. On WJZ | CBS News Baltimore this morning, Wes Guckert, PTP talks with Meg McNamara and Tim Williams about how schools should prioritize safe routes to school. #schoolzonesafety #backtoschool #saferoutestoschool #traffic #trafficsafety #transportationplanning #trafficengineering

Bus Safety Tip: Practice good pedestrian behavior by walking on the sidewalk, and if there is no sidewalk stay out of the street. If you must walk in the street, walk single file, face traffic and stay as close to the edge of the road as you can. School bus transportation plays a critical role in the education of #Wyoming’s students. In our rural state, it might be the only direct link between a child and the classroom. This tip is from the National Association for Pupil Transportation. #WyDeptEd #WyoEdChat #SchoolSafety

🚸 School Zones Are Back! Drive Safely! 🚸 With schools back in session, it's time to slow down and stay alert! 🛑 Here are some important reminders to keep everyone safe: - ⚠️ Speed Limits: Always follow the reduced speed limit in school zones. - 👀 Stay Alert: Watch for children crossing the street, especially near crosswalks, buses, and school entrances. - 🛑 Stop for School Buses: When a bus has its stop sign out and lights flashing, stop and wait. It’s the law! - 🚶 Yield to Pedestrians: Always give right of way to students crossing the road. - 🤚 No Distractions: Keep your focus on the road—no texting or calls behind the wheel. Let’s work together to keep our streets safe for students, teachers, and parents! 💛 #DriveSafe #SchoolZoneSafety #BackToSchool #SlowDown #SafeDriving #RoadSafety
