How do you make sure that St. John's Newfoundland's steep roads are kept passable throughout the winter? ❄ With tonnes and tonnes of rock salt, apparently. And I was told that St. John's annual waterfront salt mountain actually comes from the Compass Minerals salt mine in Goderich, Ontario on the shores of Lake Huron (Canada’s largest salt mine). Not sure if other tourists were taking pictures of it, but I found it pretty fascinating. Road salt in Ontario is typically stored in beehive-like structures (to presumably protect it from the elements), but with a mountain of salt like this, that wouldn't be feasible. So it seems that they opt for large tarps, weighed down by tires instead (see bottom right picture). While I found it interesting if I lived in the waterfront condos (see condo just below the Canadian flag 🇨🇦 in the top right picture) and had my Harbour view replaced by a salt mountain for months a year, I'd likely be less excited. Apparently blowing salt is an issue too in windy St. John's.
