Did you know that plastics and used tires are major contributors to the emissions of greenhouse gases that are affecting our environment and climate? As plastics decay, they release traces of methane and ethylene, two powerful greenhouse gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect. Additionally, the burning of plastic waste emits black carbon, which has a warming impact up to 1,500 times stronger than CO2 per unit of mass. The good news is that Black carbon lasts only days to weeks in the atmosphere but has significant direct and indirect impacts on the climate, snow and ice, agriculture, and human health. With the world emitting around 54.6 billion tonnes of CO2 annually, plastics alone are responsible for around 3.3% of global emissions. This is a staggering amount, considering the detrimental impact it has on our planet. It's crucial that we take action to reduce our use of plastics and properly dispose of them to minimize their contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. Building Quad B Multisport facilities using repurposed materials soil used tires and recycled plastics will reduce the amount greenhouse gas emissions from such materials hence contribute to a stable climate, clean environment and play a part in contributing to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. We all have a responsibility to protect our environment and combat climate change. By making simple changes in our daily lives, such as reducing our use of plastics and properly recycling them, we can make a positive impact on our planet. Let's work together to create a sustainable future for generations to come. #ClimateChange #PlasticPollution #GreenhouseGases Alex Munyiri Karina Murray Noleen Mariappen Impactoverse Aunua Global Think Ocean CIC Inger Andersen Dr Renuka Thakore Minderoo Foundation United Nations UN-Habitat Urban Basic Services UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) COP28 UAE

As global climate discussions at COP29 Azerbaijan highlight environmental action, Alchemie Technology calls for urgent government intervention to tackle water pollution in the textile industry. 𝐖𝐞 𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧-𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫, 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐮𝐬𝐚𝐠𝐞. Textile dyeing contributes significantly to environmental degradation, particularly through severe water pollution. Transitioning the industry to sustainable practices is essential but requires regulatory support and funding for widespread adoption and real impact. A primary aim this year is to secure more funds for lower-income countries to help them reduce emissions and adapt to climate change. Textile-producing countries, which often face challenges in setting and achieving ESG targets, need collaborative support from governments, brands, supply chains, and innovators to drive real progress. Water pollution from textile dyeing affects communities worldwide, yet sustainable solutions, like our low-carbon digital dyeing Endeavour™ technology, offer hope. With government backing, we can transform textile dyeing and protect our planet's waterways for generations to come. #COP29 #SustainableFashion #WaterConservation #AlchemieTechnology #sustainability #textileindustry #fashion #futureoftextiles

From Baku to Busan. As negotiations at COP29 ended last weekend, new UN talks on plastic pollution started this week. We're almost mid-decade where emissions need to drop - fast… So, what was the outcome of COP29 anyway? 👉A finance deal was agreed at the 11th hour. There won’t be a trillion+ as developing countries said is needed, instead a ‘modest’ $300 billion a year was agreed. But still, this is triple today’s amount (due to expire in 2025) 👉China pointed out that they are technically still a developing country, so delegates pledged that China will donate to the climate fund on a voluntary basis 👉There was a lot of awkwardness at this year’s COP, partly related to Trump’s victory. Trump wants to exit all climate action, including the Paris Agreement (to limit global warming to 1.5°C). But even the Exxon chief urges Trump to keep the US in The Paris Agreement 👉There were discussions around AI and how this can help climate, including recent accurate hurricane predictions (a change from the usual AI = more emissions talk) 👉Agreements were made on global carbon credit trading - this concept has been around for ages but the rules are now set (hopefully this will uncover shady credit trading) 🤔Looking to Brazil next year the big question remains: will delegates agree on transitioning away from fossil fuels? 👉Now, onto the plastics pollution treaty-talks this week: -5th and final discussions to agree something legally binding on plastic production (to end plastic pollution) and chemicals used -Although, this will be tricky as there are a lot of delegates from the fossil fuel and plastic production industries -Powerful quote by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation: “If we don’t act now, by 2050 there could be more plastic than fish in the oceans.” Happy Friday! 🌍 World Environment Day 🌎 A New Look at Plastic 🌏 Today we celebrate World Environment Day, a fundamental opportunity to reflect on the collective commitment towards a more sustainable future. 🎯 For this reason we wish to share a perspective that is often overlooked, if not mystified: the positive contribution of Plastics in protecting the environment through the reduction of CO2 emissions. Some food for thought: ❇️ WEIGHT REDUCTION: IRON has a specific weight of approx. 8 g/cm3, GLASS of 2.5 and PLASTICS goes from approx. 0.9 to 1.6 g/cm3. If we consider that weight is one of the most impacting factors on energy consumption linked to movement, it is easy to understand the enormous gap in CO2 emissions. And this is the basis of the cars weight reduction which led to a strong reduction in fuel consumption. ✅ PRODUCTION ENERGY EFFICIENCY: IRON and GLASS have melting points above 1.500°C, PLASTICS (various thermoplastic materials) ranges from approx. 110 to 350°C. Even in this case, the enormous gap in terms of energy consumption is evident. This is also a key element in the ECO-DESIGN phase to reduce the CARBON FOOTPRINT of new products. ✳️ THERMAL INSULATION: PLASTICS is an excellent insulator, especially in its foamed version, and offers a great contribution in terms of energy efficiency in multiple applications: constructions, appliances, equipment, etc. ♻️ RECYCLING AND REUSE: THERMOPLASTIC MATERIALS ARE 100% RECYCLABLE and this offers an extraordinary contribution to the #CIRCULARECONOMY in terms of reducing waste thanks to the life cycle extension. 🌱 Towards a Sustainable Future: pollution (not only from plastic) is a serious problem that requires urgent and effective solutions. This is why it's important to know the reality in order to make the right choices to obtain lasting results. The #EuropeanGreenDeal aims to transform the EU into a modern, resource-efficient and competitive economy. PLASTICS can make a valid contribution, in line with the #SustainableDevelopmentGoals of the #UN2030Agenda, in particular Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and Goal 13 (Fight against Climate Change). 💚 On this #WorldEnvironmentDay, let's reflect objectively and without prejudice on how we can transform environmental challenges into opportunities for a more sustainable world. Together, we can make a difference! 💚 #GhepiInnovation #ResponsiblePlastics #CO2Reduction #GreenDeal #Decarbonization #Agenda2030 #SustainableInnovation #SustainableFuture #ClimateChange

It does beg the question why? Why is so much energy in business put into avoiding/ circumventing circular economy strategies? Prime example, I recently called out a mega corporation for seeming greenwash and was duly 'corrected'*. But the correction just pointed out more subversion; the person used to justify the corps actions is a lobbyist for the timber industry who now trades 'carbon credits'. Vested interests anyone?!. So returning to the question; Is the circular economy bad for old economic practices? Does Capitalism have a fundamental flaw in respect it runs on ever increasing consumption? *https://lnkd.in/eV75Zng7

Personal story: When I attended COP27 in Egypt in 2022 still with Circle Economy you could find recycling bins that allowed you to sort, plastics, metals, paper, glass everywhere As you can imagine for a climate conference, attendees took this very seriously, especially as the organisation put up big signs explaining the 'why' and the 'how'. Just after I put some trash in the bin, the staff made the rounds to collect the waste and I asked if I could join them. When we reached the main trash collection site, they ended up putting all the sorted waste in one large container .... My point of telling this story is not that recycling does not matter - it does. However, few people really know where there waste ends up. In addition, the majority of our products such as plastics are not really designed for recycling or reuse and end up being landfilled or incinerated. Let's put more focus on design and clever reuse models and less waste to make circularity happen! Your thoughts? #regeneration #circulareconomy #recycling

👏 Thank you for telling this story, Martijn Lopes Cardozo! This is a great example of how even if plastic is labeled recyclable and gets thrown in the recycle bin, that doesn't mean it will *actually* be recycled. Unfortunately, most plastic ends up in either a landfill or the ocean.... 👎 ♻️ One of the many great things about 100% molded fiber packaging (Like Hartmann North America's egg cartons) is that it is 100% biodegradable. Even if it *does* happen to end up in a landfill, it will break down quickly and won't be sticking around like plastics for at least two decades before turning into microplastics. ...food for thought! 💡 #ditchplastic #ditchplasticpackaging #moldedfiber #sustainablepackaging #moldedfiber #eggcartons

👕 How can we make circularity a reality in the textiles industry? Today at #COP29, we joined an insightful discussion on "Decarbonizing the global textile value chains – trade policy and practical experiences" along with representatives from UN Environment Programme, UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) and Forum on Trade, Environment & the SDGs (TESS) The main takeaway? Tackling climate change in the textile industry demands a bold transformation: ♻️ Reusability is key: Producing less and embracing reusability can significantly lower environmental impact. 🟢 Circular strategies drive change: Policies that prioritize repair, reuse, and recycling are essential. They don’t just cut down environmental harm—they pave the way for sustainable development in the industry. 🤝 Collaboration is non-negotiable: From UNEP’s Circularity and Used Textile Trade Project to other global efforts, partnerships are crucial to building a truly sustainable textile ecosystem. #TextileCircularity #COP29 #CircularEconomy COP29 Azerbaijan

🌍 Happy Earth Day 2024! 🌳 This year’s theme is Planet vs. Plastics 🌎. It’s a global call to arms 📣, demanding a 60% reduction in the production of plastics by 2040 and an ultimate goal of building a plastic-free future for generations to come. The world is in the midst of a triple planetary crisis of climate change 🌡️, biodiversity loss 🐾, and pollution and waste 🗑️. The global economy is consuming ever more natural resources 🌲, while the world is not on track to meet the #SustainableDevelopmentGoals 🎯. According to the World Meteorological Organization, 2023 was the warmest year on record 🌡️, with the global average near-surface temperature at 1.45°C above the pre-industrial baseline. It crowned the warmest ten-year period on record 📈. 📚 Here are some facts to ponder upon: 📊 Global plastics has reached an estimated 460 million metric tons in recent years 🛍️ One million plastic bottles are purchased every minute worldwide 🌍, while up to five trillion plastic bags are used a year 🐠 By 2050 there will be more plastic in the oceans than there are fish (by weight) 💊 Bisphenol A also known as BPA, used to make billions of plastic beverage containers, dinnerware, protective linings of food cans and toys, is considered an endocrine disruptor, meaning it can both decrease or increase endocrine activity in humans and cause adverse health effects . (Source: earthday.org) The unprecedented ocean warmth and sea level rise 🌊, glacier retreat and Antarctic sea ice loss ❄️, are also part of the grim picture. On an average day in 2023, nearly one third of the ocean surface was gripped by a marine heatwave 🌡️, harming vital ecosystems and food systems. (Source: WMO State of Global Climate 2023) The UN Environment Programme identifies three market shifts to bring about change to end the plastic pollution – #reuse ♻️, #recycle ♻️, and #reorient and diversify 🔄. These three shifts would result in an 80% decrease in plastic pollution and could create about 700,000 additional jobs by 2040. However, action will still be required to manage 100 million metric tons of plastics from short-lived products annually, by 2040. Let’s unite in our efforts to protect the Earth today and for generations to come🤝. Together, we can make a meaningful impact and create a more #sustainable world 🌍. #EarthDay2024 #PlanetVsPlastics #ClimateChange #Sustainability #SDG2030 #SDG12 #BeatPlasticPollution #ClimateACtion #ActNow #EcosystemHealth #NatureHealing

Over the past few years, it has been a mystery as to 'what is next after carbon? Is it biodiversity? Water? Well, as it turns out, this year's Earth Day theme is plastics, and it's one that is getting global business attention in a ramp up to a possible new UN treaty on the topic. There is a double meaning here with 'there is no time to waste.' For single-use plastics, there is no time taken from use to waste. Meanwhile, we can't afford to waste time in solving that issue. While plastics have an intersection with global impact, company's have material intersection with plastics, depending on their industry and use. By approaching this topic with an ESG mindset, companies can get ahead of potential regulation and figure out thoughtful ways to build business resilience and drive sustainability. 📰 No Time to Waste (free/gated): https://lnkd.in/gA2HBfBq 📚 ESG Mindset: https://lnkd.in/gp3aKPhr #ESG #Sustainability #Plastics #ClimateChange #EarthDay CC Kogan Page Business & Management
