As a child and educational psychologist, I encounter many cases of 'school refusal'. It's a complex issue that isn't about truancy or delinquency but rather a struggle with attending school due to underlying problems. We often use the term - emotionally based school avoidance (EBSA) So here are 3 common reasons behind EBSA: 1. Anxiety and Stress 🌪️ 2. Learning Difficulties or Disabilities 📚 3. Social Problems 🤝 Understanding and addressing the underlying reasons for school avoidance is crucial. It requires a compassionate approach, open communication, and often professional support. By identifying and tackling the root causes, we can help children overcome their reluctance to attend school and ensure they receive the education and social experiences they deserve. I help parents identify and overcome obstacles preventing their child from thriving in school & at home ... 🏠 DM 'Let's Talk' to find out how! #educationalpsychologist #educationalpsychology #childpsychologist #childpsychology #edpsych #specificlearningdisability #specificlearningdifficulties #specialeducation #specialeducationalneeds #senparent #senparenting #senparents #educationalpsychologistkent #educationalpsychologykent #kentschool #kentmums #kentkids #kentmumscircle #kentschool #kentparents

I remember I had to memorise this chart, in countless variations, over and over: first, as a medical student; then as a GP trainee; while studying for my USMLEs; as a candidate for the DCH (Diploma in Child Health), and finally as a psychiatrist, for the MRCPsych exams. One thing I learned since the last time I studied the milestones in any detail is this: life is infinitely more complicated and chaotic than this chart (and its infinite variations) suggest. And it is particularly complicated when it comes to neurodevelopmental conditions, like ASC and/or ADHD, etc. TWO things are important to remember when it comes to these conditions and the developmental milestones: 1. They may or may not follow the same order, and 2. Some of these will happen "on time"; others will be delayed. Yet, there's a third pattern, rarely mentioned: some of these milestones will be "ahead of schedule". We cover this topic in the Module II, "AUTISTIC is... Uneven". Speaking of Unevenness, here's the third point, which I have only seen mentioned a couple of times in literature: We often don't follow a regular stepwise progression in acquiring ANY skills, including those that are used as "the early milestones", but also other, more complex ones, like reading or swimming. I call this pattern "From Zero to Hero". What is important is that the person (whether a child or an adult) is DEVELOPMENTALLY READY for it.

Developmental milestones are key skills or abilities that most children reach by a certain age. These milestones are categorized into different areas of development, such as physical (motor skills), cognitive (thinking and problem-solving abilities), social and emotional, and language skills. They provide a framework for understanding typical child development and can help parents, caregivers, and healthcare professionals monitor a child's growth and development. They serve as a valuable tool in assessing and promoting healthy child development. They provide a roadmap for monitoring progress, identifying potential concerns, and supporting children in reaching their developmental potential. Illustration credit: Fatima Alowirdi
