VP Sales. Job descriptions for this position often don't match what is REALLY expected. Many founders and CEOs want a miracle worker. "I've built a fantastic company with an amazing product. Now, I realize that selling it is the tough part. So, I'll just hire a Sales VP or Chief Revenue Officer and expect them to work magic." They believe hiring a top-tier Sales VP is the silver bullet to transform their growth. Here's the truth: It doesn’t work like that. I greatly respect sales professionals and understand their crucial role in taking any business to the next level. However, it’s not as simple as it looks. Salespeople don’t generate demand; they turn it into revenue. Creating demand falls on the product and marketing teams, with a major emphasis on the product itself. Here’s the process: 1. Start with an outstanding product. 2. Add exceptional marketing. 3. Then, bring in excellent sales. You can’t skip any of these "world-class" steps and still expect next-level success. Yet, too often, the first two steps are neglected, and the sales team gets blamed. Did you fire your Head of Product/Chief Technology Officer when you lost deals due to missing features? We want to hire a head of sales, someone who starts by calling on customers today and as they gain knowledge of the industry and company, they build a team, processes, etc in their likeness to run Very interesting role to hire for, as they need to build a function that 5x’s the company well into 9 figures of revenue, yet is willing to get their hands dirty to make it happen. It’s the dream job that my peers and I wanted in our 20’s as corporate wouldn’t give us the freedom … yet by the time people get promoted, it’s a job that more seasoned people don’t want as they can’t or don’t want to do the dirty work any longer This is probably the #1 reason why seasoned corporate people are unable or prefer not to make the transition to SMB

Hiring a sales rep is a great topic and here is a overview from John (JD) Dean. We often see Founders, who are not experienced at hiring sales reps, look for the wrong things in an interview. Reps who do not perform well in their roles are often great at interviews - plenty of practice. Don't hire to your Hollywood vision of a sales rep - they are wrong for you. Look for the things JD mentioned in the video - business curious, ask great questions, listen, looking for next steps.
