This is our weekly interview series in which we speak to a QuTech member about their work, their goals and what makes them happy. 👋 This week, we feature Maurice van der Maas, PhD student at QuTech. ❓ Hi, could you please introduce yourself? 💬 Hi! My name is Maurice. I am now in the second year of my PhD in the Ishihara Lab, in the quantum internet division. I did my master’s thesis in the same group. In my master’s I studied electrical engineering, but now my interests have shifted towards integrated photonics and single photon detection. ❓ How does your work contribute to creating the quantum future? 💬 I am working on photonic integration for spin qubits in diamond. The goal is to build a scalable system for this type of quantum computing by integrating many photonic components together with the diamond on a single chip, while simultaneously integrating control electronics very close to the individual components. ❓ What is your favourite thing about working at QuTech? 💬 What really keeps me going every day is the social aspect. I enjoy having discussions, technical or otherwise. Since I’m working on integration and fabrication, I’m lucky to be able to collaborate with many different people within QuTech and in the cleanrooms. The large diversity in nationalities and backgrounds adds an extra dimension to this that makes the experience much more interesting. ❓ What do you like to do outside of work? 💬 Outside work I often play games, either videogames or DnD during the weekend. I also like to go bouldering, and when I have some energy left, I like to read books, mainly sci-fi and fantasy. Every now and then I also like to binge a good series (and I’ll take this chance to recommend ‘Scavengers Reign’, really good sci-fi show). We frequently talk about SRC Research Scholars, but what do we mean? An SRC Research Scholar is a student in the semiconductor talent pipeline who is working towards a degree or has recently graduated and is engaged in SRC-sponsored R&D/WFD programs. These students may be pursuing an Associate's, Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctoral degree, or they may be a postdoc. SRC Research Scholars do not need to be directly financially supported by SRC. Rather, they must be participating in SRC research or a related WFD program. We ask that all SRC Research Scholars add their SRC Research Scholars Program LinkedIn work experience. This is our weekly interview series in which we speak to a QuTech member about their work, their goals and what makes them happy. 👋 This week, we feature Théo Durant, Bachelor Student at QuTech. ❓ Hi, could you please introduce yourself? 💬 My name is Théo and I am currently doing my bachelor thesis at the Taminiau Lab at QuTech. I was born and raised in Brussels, Belgium. I came to the Netherlands to pursue a bachelor in Applied Physics. ❓ How does your work contribute to creating the quantum future? 💬 The goal of my project was to build a g(2) autocorrelation measurement setup. The Taminiau Lab focuses on controlling optically active defects in solid-state systems and utilizes these defects as qubits. These qubits are the foundation of quantum computing and the quantum internet. These g2 measurements are essential for optically active qubits as they confirm the presence of single defects, hence indicating the presence of a single qubit that can be controlled. ❓ What is your favourite thing about working at QuTech? 💬 I really appreciate the cooperative atmosphere at QuTech. Whenever I encounter an issue, whether it's technical or theoretical, there are always people ready to dedicate their time to assist me. Despite my knowledge and experience being relatively limited compared to others at QuTech, my contributions have always been appreciated, and I've consistently felt regarded as an equal. I would really recommend QuTech to any bachelor student looking to do their bachelor thesis. ❓ What do you like to do outside of work? 💬 The majority of my leisure time is devoted to practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or engaging in board games and card games with my friends. Additionally, I enjoy the occasional evening out in Delft or nearby areas. When my free time is limited, you may find me enjoying an episode of a sitcom or immersing myself in a book. A 2021 workforce study issue by AIM Photonics projected that the US photonics industry needs over 40,000 skilled workers, such as engineering technicians, through the decade's end. 2021 now feels like an eon ago...covid times, I was deeply immersed in my PhD project on the Quantum Knowledge Seeking Agent (QKSA). As a side I was aiming to build a global collaboration network and was thrilled when my project was accepted for #QIntern 2021. There, I met an amazing group of interns, passionate to explore various aspects of QKSA. One intriguing offshoot was whether the quantum process tomography in QKSA could be made more restrictive based on physically realizable quantum processes. Thanks to research with Tamal Acharya, we found that the answer was yes! This led to our project on a quantum circuit model for causal tomography based on Giulio Chiribella's previous work. Soon after, I was fortunate to have Akash Kundu join the project, which continued well beyond QIntern. Together, we refined the model and conducted experiments. Our work was accepted as posters at #CausalWorlds and #QIP2023. As we awaited results or peer reviews, our conversations spanned topics from philosophy to new projects (spoiler alert for the next post soon). This project wove the threads of our friendship and collaboration, eventually leading to the cornerstone of the Quantum Intelligence Research Team. Today, I am proud to announce that our work is published in Wiley's Advanced Quantum Technology journal.
