PEAK RENEWABLE ENERGY RECORD REACHED! Wednesday 2nd October is a day to remember as we near the end of 2024. Renewable energy sources supplied 73.87% of the electricity in the National Electricity Market (NEM) during a half-hour period ending at 11:30 am. This was a new record for renewable energy generation. At that time, the electricity came from: - Rooftop solar panels: 43.7% - Grid solar: 19.7% - Wind power: 8.5% - Hydropower: 1.6% - Other sources: 0.4% The remaining 26.1% came from non-renewable energy sources. The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) is working with the energy industry to increase the use of renewable energy and remove technical challenges through "engineering roadmaps", aiming to benefit all Australian households and businesses. Someone has got to explain to me why this is such a big deal because frankly I don't get it. If it was for 6 hrs that would be different. How many billions of dollars did it cost to get approx 74% renewable energy for 30 mins during a spring morning ? So from what old google was able to tell me, wind farms started coming on line around 1986 and solar was introduced around 1989. So in the 38 yrs renewable energy has been in the NEM, the best we have achieved is 74% for 30 mins. Not sure about you, but I'm not impressed. How much of the entire NEM is renewable is a better metric to gauge where the transition is at.

That's an exciting milestone for renewable energy in Australia! To see 73.87% of the electricity in the National Electricity Market come from renewable sources is a clear sign of progress towards a sustainable energy future. The high contribution from rooftop solar panels, in particular, shows how important individual households are in driving this transformation. It's fantastic to see that over 60% of the energy came from solar—both rooftop and grid-based. However, while this record is worth celebrating, it also highlights the need to focus on maintaining and surpassing these achievements consistently. The remaining 26.1% from non-renewable sources shows there’s still work to be done in transitioning to a 100% renewable grid. The collaboration between AEMO and the energy sector through "engineering roadmaps" is promising, especially if it means overcoming technical challenges and ensuring reliability for all Australians. It’s clear that we're on the right path, but let’s use this record as inspiration to push for even greater ambition and innovation in renewable energy solutions!
