NZ has a benign climate, but for those frozen lands there are battery chemistries emerging that can operate better at low temperatures. SK On., (battery supplier for Ford Motor Company, Volkswagen Group AG and Hyundai Motor Company (현대자동차),) is tackling the problem with its Winter Pro lithium-iron-phosphate battery. LFP batteries typically lose up to 70% of their driving range when temperatures drop to - 20C (-4F). Electric car batteries are seen as a possible option for increasing energy storage capacity, though increased wear and tear seems not to be as big of a question as it should be. Electric cars only have so many charge/discard cycles and battery systems aren’t cheap.

Stumbled upon this interesting statistic today. With Telsa's rise to popularity and big automobile companies such as Ford, GM, and Nissan putting more time, effort, and money into electric vehicles, it is shocking to see that only 6% of Americans want their next car to be battery-electric powered. This is compared to the 67% who prefer a gas/diesel engine for their next car. It seems as though gasoline-powered cars in the United States are not going anywhere for the time being. #PGE301

The development of solid-state batteries could be a game-changer in the EV industry. 🔋🚗 In a recent interview, my colleague Raphael Rettig estimated that these batteries could potentially slash charging times to less than 10 minutes. But there's a catch. Raphael also warns, "I don't believe that solid-state will become a major player in the volume electric vehicles segment before the middle of next decade." The reason? The significant safety risk posed by the need for these batteries to be packed tightly together. In the next five years, significant upgrades to the batteries in electric vehicles should finally hit the market. In the works for decades, these changes are likely to mean that by 2030, diesel or petrol vehicles will cost more than their electric equivalents; some EVs will charge as quickly as filling up at a gas station; and super long-range EVs will make the phrase “range anxiety” seem quaint. StoreDot has delivered prototype batteries to automakers, and its current tech can enable a car’s battery to add 150 kilometres of range in just five minutes of charging. By 2028—just two years after SES AI’s batteries are set to debut in production vehicles—the company’s engineers aim to deliver to automakers a battery that can add 150 kilometres of range in just 3 minutes,

This will have a big impact on EV costs.

Why automakers like GM, Hyundai and Honda work with us? Consumers want affordable EVs that have the same range as today’s high-end ones. That would mean even entry-level EVs might go 300 miles on a charge. High-end EVs with bigger batteries could, in turn, set new records for range, besting current record-holders which top out at around 500 miles.
