My time as a software engineer at Zimpler is coming to a close, and it's been one heck of a ride. I've grown so much as a software engineer, watching this company evolve from its startup roots to a scale-up across continents. I’d like to share some of my takeaways from the three and a half years I've been at Zimpler. * Great recruiters build great teams: Our recruiter, Olga Bagmat, consistently found us talented people we wanted to work with. Over the years, I heard over and over from my colleagues that they loved to come to work, because of their colleagues. This kind of loyalty and respect towards your peers is in my view the biggest contributor to an efficient tech department. Happy colleagues are the best salesmen when finding other talented colleagues. I have seen candidates, with many options on the table, join Zimpler simply due to the team spirit being so contagious during interviews. * Early decisions matter (a lot!): I’ve seen all the stages of the product, and the things you build at the start can have long-lasting effects (good and bad). Sometimes you have to take a step back, zoom out, and look at the bigger picture. * True ownership is key: One of the things I mostly appreciated at Zimpler, was the leadership's ability to put trust into the teams to deliver features. A team, given the mandate to truly own their work, will take on challenges with full enthusiasm, knowing that they’re fully responsible for the results. The motivation and grit at Zimpler is unlike anything I’ve ever seen in my years of software development. * Global expansion is tough: During my time at Zimpler we went from basement coding to handling massive volumes and big clients across continents. Turns out, moving into different markets is way trickier than you might expect. I think it can be worth your time to spend some time to think about vision when building the early blocks of a system, sometimes early considerations can make future shipping of features a lot easier. In our situation, every new market we entered presented its own unique challenges. * Super proud of what we built: My team and I had the best prerequisites to succeed, and I’m so proud to leave Zimpler knowing that my colleagues will continue to improve and work on a resilient and secure system that will last for a long time. It's been an honor to be part of Zimpler's growth, and now I’m moving on full of energy to take on my next challenge. If you think my experience and drive might be a good fit for your team, reach out! 👋

🌟 INWED Spotlight: Meet Wednesday's Wonder Woman 🚀 Today we're back in Sydney to celebrate one of the most brilliant quiet achievers we have in our Primary, Aged and Community Care team here at Telstra Health, Evon Dos. Evon is a software engineer at heart and a Technical Lead within the business, driving thought provoking and strong technical leadership within our cloud products. She has always inspired me with her capability, openness and matter-of-fact thinking and we are truly honoured to have her within our team - I love the secret club analogy Evon 😎 Thank you Evon Dos for being the visible role model that we see today! 1. Tell me an engineer without telling me you're an engineer ED: I thrive on mastering languages that aren't spoken but are understood globally, where syntax and structure determine the functionality. 2. You need me in your life because... ED: I craft solutions that streamline processes, and open new possibilities for your business or project. From designing user-friendly interfaces to optimizing performance and security. 3. Favourite engineering tech over the last 5 years ED: Containers and Kubernetes 4. Sell engineering to my 10-year-old self ED: If you like turning ideas into real-life adventures! or you would like to have a superpower that lets you build games, apps that help people and easy their daily life. Plus, you get to work with other creative and smart people who love to build cool stuff, then software engineering is the perfect job for you. It's a bit like being in a secret club where everyone speaks the language. That's what software engineering is all about. #INWED24 #EnhancedByEngineering #WomenInEngineering

Coming back with more 'everydays' at #teamwestwing 👇 In software engineering it's often a big flex to say 'we do DDD' or event storming. Often after 'we are hiring', etc. And that's fine! I sometimes do that too! But... In fact, at least in my eyes, the most beneficial (and most challenging) part is about transplanting this 'event-driven' mindset to - exactly - all those little things you do #everyday. The image from my post is a shot of a document that I prepare for business team. It depicts findings after investigating the system we want to adapt. You can see events and policies that are in place now. Said document intends to prompt stakeholders to think of policies that will in turn mitigate risks coming from current system behaviour. I hope it will be easy to read, so that our biz folks can fill it with their expectations. At #westwing, having tech-business cohesion is a part of a #workculture! #workculturematters #teamwestwing #employeeadvocacy

Reading this brings such a tear to my eye! 🥲 Incredibly proud to have been part of making the Co.Lab 🚀 joincolab.io x Coding Temple partnership happen. Taking a "Problem-First" Product approach I learned from Co.Lab to help solve the "problem" gap of real-world experience that Software Bootcamp students at Coding Temple were experiencing, and then making the intro between Mikelynn Romero, Evan Shy and Sefunmi Osinaike to result in this Tech Residency Program was an amazing full-circle impact story that my future behavioral interviews will thank me for. 🤩 This partnership has already impacted over 50 up-and-coming software engineers, providing them with the team-oriented skills they need to succeed in their careers. Every new intro from a Coding Temple Student in the CoLab Alumni Chat is another injection of happiness. 💫 The lesson here: You can manufacture your own value from anywhere, and even the littlest move can make one heck of a big splash! 💫 Congratulations to Co.Lab and Coding Temple on this fantastic achievement! I'm honored to have played a role in this collaboration, and I can't wait to see the continued positive impact on aspiring software engineers. PS: Ya'll - I do couples who end up in marriages too! 😅 ----- If you're interested in a life in Product: Let Co.Lab 🚀 joincolab.io show you the way. If you're interested in a life in Software: Enroll with Coding Temple. If you need real world experience, check out this program!! #CoLab #CodingTemple #PartnershipSuccess #RealWorldExperience #youbelongintech

Big News: I Just Graduated from ALX! After months of hard work, countless late nights, and more coffee than I care to admit, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve officially graduated from ALX! When I first started, I knew this journey would be challenging, but I didn’t expect it to include quite so many moments of staring blankly at my screen, hoping my code would magically fix itself. (Spoiler: it never did!) But each bug I squashed and every project I completed made the experience worth it. There were definitely moments when I questioned my life choices ...like when a missing semicolon decided to ruin my entire day. But those struggles taught me resilience and the art of perseverance (and also that semicolons are more important than I ever realized). And then there were the “Aha!” moments... those lightbulb moments when everything finally clicks. I lived for those! The satisfaction of watching a stubborn piece of code finally work was unmatched. It’s like solving a mystery, except the culprit is usually a typo lol. One of the best parts of the ALX experience was the incredible community, I made lots of friends from different countries. From late-night study sessions to sharing memes about our shared coding frustrations, it was comforting to know I wasn’t alone in this journey. Huge shoutout to my fellow grads Catherine Wuyep ... we made it through together! And a massive thank you to the mentors who guided us through the chaos. Their patience and wisdom were invaluable, especially when I was ready to throw in the towel. They reminded me that every mistake was just another step toward success. It feels surreal to see how far I’ve come. From barely understanding basic concepts to confidently tackling complex projects, the transformation has been incredible. And yes, I did celebrate with an extra slice of cake because every milestone deserves a treat! Now, I’m excited to dive into the world of Frontend software development, equipped with the skills and knowledge I gained at ALX. I’m ready to take on new challenges, keep learning, and make an impact in the tech world. alx_africa #ALXGraduate #TechJourney #NewBeginnings #CodingLife
