Very compelling that Yale Law graduates make culture the number one criterion for firm selection. Discrimination of any type is not acceptable. Not dealing firmly with partners who abuse clients or other industry members financially or otherwise is not acceptable. Excusing wrongdoers on the basis of seniority, friendship or insider status is not acceptable. In assessing culture, get all the information you can and inquire broadly.

Happy Women's History Month! In celebration, I want to highlight my work from last year, "One Among Many: Charlotte Kolmitz, Assistant U.S. Attorney in Seattle, 1918 -1925" Charlotte Kolmitz was born in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1895, and in 1911, her family moved to Seattle, Washington. There, she pursued a legal education at the University of Washington Law Department, was the Vice President of the Law Association, and was appointed Assistant U.S. Attorney of Seattle straight out of graduation. Check out her story below! ⚖ #womenshistorymonth #legalhistory #law #womeninlaw #washingtonstate #UNL #legal #research

In honor of Women’s History Month, Brooks Pierce is spotlighting women attorneys and senior staff at the firm. They will continue the conversation about women’s history and achievements this month by providing advice and insight about being a woman in the legal profession. Elizabeth Troutman, partner at Brooks Pierce, shares her greatest personal accomplishment: "My practice is in the field of education law – supporting educational organizations to do a better job teaching children each year as the world continues to change and new classes of children enter kindergarten. All of that is to say that there is no prize, no moment of accomplishment, in that kind of work. My greatest personal accomplishment is probably the day that I accepted that fact. Every day that I get up and do the best I can to support those organizations is a good day. That is the role of a lawyer – helping others accomplish what they are trying to accomplish in a lawful way. They are our clients’ accomplishments, not our own." “Law schools are pipelines to elite leadership roles in government and private industry,” the study reads. “Lawyers make up a tenth of CEOs, a third of state governors, more than a third of U.S. House members, more than half of U.S. senators, and almost all judges and prosecutors. A decline in racial diversity in law schools, particularly elite law schools, may lead to a decline in racial diversity in these key leadership roles. In honor of Women’s History Month, Brooks Pierce is spotlighting women attorneys and senior staff at the firm. They will continue the conversation about women’s history and achievements this month by providing advice and insight about being a woman in the legal profession. Jessi Thaller-Moran, partner at Brooks Pierce, shares advice to women starting a legal career: "One piece of legal advice to women starting a legal career is that there are a million ways to advocate for your client. Loudest and most combative is not always the most effective. Use the beginning of your career as an excuse to “try on” advocacy styles from mentors, friends, colleagues, even people you spot in the courtroom or across the table at a deal. You will be at your best as a lawyer when you are authentic to your personal strengths." Learn more on our website: https://lnkd.in/eZxV7ndu

This may be my favorite headline, ever "the fine line between bravery and stupidity", which highlights what it takes to be one of the few #climatelawyers out there. You can register to read the article for free, or here's a few highlights: ✅ There's a fine line between bravery and stupidity, take calculated risks and try to stay on the side of bravery. ✅ Mentorship is key: ask for help and if you're in a position to offer help, give it freely, particularly to folks who represent diverse lived experience. ✅ Skill up while you focus on existing work, and share what you know (i.e. teach). ✅ The urgency of the climate crisis propels us to take action, and sometimes you just have to go for it. ✅ I could not have done this without immense support, here's some of the entities and organizations that have been instrumental in my journey: AIA Seattle, International WELL Building Institute (IWBI), PACIFICA LAW GROUP LLP, Stok, Stefanie Young, National LGBT Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC), University of Washington, Boston Architectural College and many, many more individuals and partners (you know who you are). https://lnkd.in/g23WjvVc

GC's and C-suite executives need to hold their law firms accountable for their demand that law schools enforce a zero tolerance policy for anti-semitism, which you can find below. Hundreds of law firms signed this letter way back in November 2023. The letter and signatories can be found at the link below. Demand to know whether those firms are planning to recruit at Harvard, Penn, Georgetown, Yale and other "top" schools that continue to allow their campuses to provide fertile ground for Jew hate. And to those within law firms themselves, make your voices heard. Silence is complicity. https://lnkd.in/ee4mtP8u
