Meet Carl, a dedicated Surgical Rapid Assessment Unit (SRAU) surgeon who is passionate about transforming emergency surgical care. 🏥 The SRAU located at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) is one of first units launched in Queensland, coordinated by the Healthcare Improvement Unit (HIU). The unit's team is changing how emergency surgical care is provided for patients by focussing on speed and precision and offering early, senior surgical decision making to ensure patients get the right care, when they need it. Carl began his medical career at the RBWH in 2004 as an intern, returning after training across Queensland to help transform emergency surgical care in the Emergency and Trauma Centre (ETC) as part of the SRAU team. What makes Carl’s role truly rewarding is the collaboration within his team (pictured below), which includes a consultant general surgeon, a clinical nurse consultant, and a principal house officer. 'We’re all working towards the same goal—to provide the best care possible,' he said. 'Emergency general surgical patients can be quite sick, so when we intervene quickly, we can really make a difference.' Since launching, the SRAU has delivered impressive results. Staff satisfaction has been high, with consultants praising the service. The team’s ability to quickly assess and treat patients has led to a higher discharge rate, easing bed pressure. The SRAU has also streamlined the referral process between the emergency department ED and general surgery, allowing for immediate assessments and faster decisions. Carl said one of the unit's key innovations has been the virtual ward. ✨ 'We’ve set up a direct pathway for patients to be admitted to the virtual ward, bypassing the need for an inpatient bed,' he said. Thanks to Carl and his dedicated team, emergency surgical care at the RBWH has reached new heights, and patients are benefiting from faster, more efficient care than ever before. A big thank you to Carl and his team for their unwavering commitment to improving lives, one patient at a time. 🙌 Metro North Health #HealthHeros
