The Queensland budget was handed down, with cost-of-living a major focus of spending. While QTIC welcomes investment in economic development and key infrastructure projects, the budget is unfortunately light on support measures for small business and tourism. It is pleasing however, to see confirmation of funding levels for Tourism and Events Queensland, increased funding for Growing Future Tourism Projects, additional funding for Bush Tourism, and release of funding for First Nations tourism. It seems like a long time ago, but the pre-covid 'tourism-tsunami' that was such a big part of our economy (but also had some social licence issues) seems to be lapping at our shores again. No coincidence, then, that the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment is reviewing the International Visitor Levy. We have all observed the impact on and pressures borne by the smaller Councils and Department of Conservation (DOC), of international tourism. International visitors are drawn to and spend much of their time in the sparsely populated hinterland. With a small ratepaying base, these areas do not necessarily financially benefit or have the means to mitigate the impacts. The 'tourism deficit' is widely accepted to be in the realm of ~$250m. Collecting revenue from the IVL is one thing, how it is distributed and spent is another. You can read our Recreation Aotearoa | Te Whai Oranga submission to the IVL consultation in the comments below.

On September 7, 2024, the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada (ITAC) reached a significant milestone—the 1st anniversary of the Indigenous Tourism Destination Fund (#ITDF). Launched in 2023, the ITDF is a tangible action towards fulfilling the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Call to Action #92, which calls for economic reconciliation. As Canada approaches the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (#NDTR2024)on September 30, this anniversary highlights the importance of creating lasting economic opportunities for the Indigenous tourism industry, ensuring they share in the long-term benefits of tourism across their lands. This fund, administered by ITAC, reflects the growing commitment to reconciliation through partnerships. While 15 non-Indigenous businesses have signed on to support the ITDF, ITAC’s goal was to include 100 non-Indigenous ITDF partners in its inaugural year. Together, we can support the growth of Indigenous tourism, create meaningful cultural experiences, and empower Indigenous communities across Canada. Venice’s new €5 tourist tax for day visitors is sparking confusion and outrage, despite earning nearly €1 million in its first 11 days (source: Euronews.Travel). So why the backlash?
