“As much as a refugee longs for that new first sip of hot coffee, that new first shower in a real one, that new first time in a warm bed for the night, and many more new first times… These new first times can take many days, months, and even years to arrive, however, It´s important to celebrate those new first times that make a difference in the refugee life” We asked some refugee leaders, When you became a refugee what were the first times you remember the most? #togetherwithoutflags #WorldRefugeeDay #worldrefugeeday2024 #RefugeLeadership #refugeesupport #refugees

I had an opportunity last week for World Refugee Day to interview with BBC News around family Reunification. As someone who has experienced family separation, I know all too well what that is like. How many more years will refugee families have to wait to be together again? Some may never see their loved ones again. We need the Administration to: -Alleviate the existing backlogs of individual cases, so families can quickly be reunited. -Expand the Parole Porgram to be global. -Scale up and invest in community sponsorship. -And reverse course on the recent Exective Order (212F) on people seeking asylum - as it is creating more family separation. It is a valid and legal pathway for people to seek asylum. Resettlement and Asylum save lives & we need to continue to expand it.
Nejra Sumic, Refugee Congress Delegate for Arizona and National Field Manager for We Are All America, gave an interview with BBC News on World Refugee Day. Nejra shared about her experiences with forced displacement and family separation, acknowledge US efforts to resettle 100,000 refugees this year, and noted the need to further reunite families that have been separated. “The United States is a welcoming country,” she said. “The United States has done very well in welcoming those who have been forcibly displaced; however, there are still things that the Administration can do to speed up the family reunification process in order to bring families together.” #RCLeads #RefugeeCongress #WAAA #USRAB

In the midst of ongoing refugee crises, it's crucial to acknowledge the various factors contributing to their displacement. While financial concerns are a factor, many refugees flee their homes due to life-threatening situations like family separation, conflict, and hazardous living conditions. It's important to approach discussions on this topic with empathy and a deeper understanding of the complexities involved. #RefugeeCrisis #GlobalPerspective #journeyhomecommunity

On World Refugee Day it is worth remembering that no one wants to be a refugee. More people have been forced to flee their homes due to violent conflict and mass atrocities than ever before. The only solution to the global displacement crisis is ending these violent conflicts and preventing new ones from emerging. In the meantime, we must recognize that people who flee their homes today may not return for two or more decades, if ever. We can't keep treating protracted displacement with temporary solutions. Long-term responses are needed with a clear path toward integration and programs that will benefit both refugee and host communities. #Refugees #WorldRefugeeDay
