🌏Reflecting on the Australasian Applied Statistics Conference 2024 📊We recently had the pleasure of participating at AASC2024, held on Rottnest Island, Western Australia, in September. This unmissable event brought together statisticians and data scientists for an enlightening journey into how statistical methodologies can be leveraged across various biological disciplines. 🧑🏫Alongside having a chance to spot Rottnest Island’s famous Quokkas, our team delivered two insightful presentations: 1. Reliable and Reproducible Analysis with Genstat - Led by Dr. Vanessa Cave and Dr. David Baird, this workshop emphasised transitioning from menu-driven analysis to reproducible programmes, showcasing key advancements in Genstat, including hierarchical generalised linear models (HGLMs) and automated REML analyses. 2. Busy, as ever, Dr. David Baird presented a second talk: Genstat, the Birder's Friend. This talk explored the diverse applications of Genstat, including how it’s used to process over 750,000 bird sightings in London, so they can be summarised by the authors of the London Bird Club's annual reports, and its input into predicting damage from the Christchurch earthquakes using data from 186,000 cases. 🚀Events like AASC2024 are vital for fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing among statisticians. Learn more about the event and what the packed programme covered: https://lnkd.in/enDZ9JXW 💻Undoubtedly, Genstat and its incredible capabilities were a huge focus of this conference. Thrilled to receive the DataFest 2024 Eastern North American Region (ENAR) finalist certificate! 🎉 I participated with two colleagues from another university, and while we didn’t take first place, we made it to the top 5 finalists. 🙌 We worked with the NHANES database, a complex survey dataset, and focused on mediation analysis to explore the relationship between macronutrient composition and hypertension among US adults. 🇺🇸🧬 Our team wrote a paper and delivered multiple presentations to the judging panel. This experience reinforced the importance of using robust methods and biostatistical analysis to address key public health questions. 💡📊 #DataFest2024 #Biostatistics #PublicHealth #NHANES #MediationAnalysis #ScientificResearch #Teamwork #HealthData
