Brilliant episode from Third Sector’s latest series The End of Charity – Can MrBeast save humanity? What are the opportunities that YouTube influencers present to engage the wider public in social issues and random acts of kindness? What are the limitations of creating content that is driven primarily by the number of watches, as opposed to tackling the complexities of root causes? And a particularly interesting tension point around white saviourism with great comments from Martha Awojobi. Couldn’t help bristle a bit when the exec director of Beast Philanthropy said people shouldn’t give to charity. I think we need ALL the components – reaching the masses and spreading kindness through accessible content from individuals with a following, but also deeply considered, strategic approaches to tackling systemic issues, which charities are far better placed to address than most YouTube influencers. If your organization is young, you can still generate the trust of an older organization with the people who lend you their reputation. "Influencer marketing" may seem like a buzz phrase, but it can be a very effective way of building trust in your organization. Influencers, experts, those with an audience can lend you their credibility so in the eyes of supporters you're trustworthy. Just think of "young" charities that have been ultra successful lately. Pencils of Promise. Charity: water. New Story. These organizations involved influencers and donors in their story and have built multi-million dollar fundraising by the lended trust.
