Drawing on nearly 20 years of being a student, from kindergarten to completing my doctorate, along with another 20 years of academic and professional experience, I have found that one of the most effective ways for a student to succeed both academically and professionally is to attend classes on time, actively participate, and dedicate time to studying the material outside of class. Here I would especially like to focus on the importance of attending class on time. Here are a few key reasons why punctual attendance at classes is so important for students: 1.       Strong Start: The beginning of a lecture usually includes a summary of the previous lecture and an introduction to the current topic. Missing this introductory section can make it difficult to fully understand the lesson. Being on time increases engagement and significantly increases student success. 2.       Improving Basic Habits: Being on time helps develop important habits such as discipline, time management and responsibility. These habits are critical to achieving a successful career in the future. On the contrary, students who have a habit of arriving late may have difficulty with time management in their professional lives. 3.       Respect: Punctuality demonstrates respect for both the instructor and fellow students. Arriving late is disruptive and distracting, reducing the overall effectiveness of the lesson and wasting others' time. Students who arrive late negatively impact both themselves and their peers. Punctuality is a virtue that transcends age and profession, promoting both academic success and personal development. It is a simple yet powerful habit that fosters essential life skills. Let us prioritize and encourage punctuality in our academic and professional endeavors.

Our next employee spotlight features Magaly Lopez Ibarra! Ibarra is an administrative assistant with TCC’s Tarrant To and Through (T3) program. Magaly was nominated, in part, for her dedication to quality in support of T3 students and staff. She’s always willing to step up and be an engaging presence at events – all while continuing her studies as a business major at UT Arlington! We spoke with Magaly about her experiences as a TCC student, the most unique aspects of her job and how she motivates herself at work. • How has your experience as a TCC alumna impacted your work with T3 students? As a TCC alumna, my experience has significantly impacted my work with T3 students. It has allowed me to establish a personal connection with our T3 scholars, as I have been through similar experiences. This connection enables me to understand their challenges and aspirations on a deeper level, making me a more effective resource for offering relevant guidance and support. • What part of TCC’s mission do you most connect with? TCC’s mission to provide affordable and accessible high-quality education resonates with me the most. I believe it is essential to enable individuals from our community to pursue their educational goals without financial barriers, ensuring that education is within reach for everyone. • What’s the most unique part of working at TCC? Working at TCC is a unique experience because of the strong sense of belonging and inclusion. As someone who was once a student at TCC and is now an employee, I feel a deep connection to the TCC community, and it is amazing to see how far I have come in my journey with the institution. • How long have you been working at TCC? I have been working at TCC for a total of four years, including my time as a part-time and student worker in the Trinity River Financial Aid Office. • How do you motivate yourself when you’re at work? Drinking matcha helps me stay focused and energized. I also listen to my favorite playlist or calming background music to create a positive and productive atmosphere. • What’s the last book you read? I am not a big reader, but the most recent book I read was a textbook for my Human Resource Management class. • What do you like to do in your free time? In my free time, I enjoy going to the gym, traveling, and listening to paranormal and true crime podcasts. I also love spending quality time with friends and family. • How do you feel you contribute to student success? I contribute to student success by offering support and creating an inclusive environment. By organizing and running various events, I help build a strong sense of community and belonging among our students, which I believe is important for their overall success.

"Contracts are like hearts; they're made to be broken." Work, I feel anyhow, is a lot like a marriage. In that: you truly ought to give your whole heart to it. And if, ultimately, you find that you cannot invest yourself that much: it probably wasn't worth doing to begin with. ✨ From Court Clerk to Classroom Champion: Embracing a Transformative Journey ✨ As I approach my birthday this Saturday, I find myself reflecting on the remarkable experiences that have shaped me as a teacher. It's fascinating how unanticipated pathways can lead us precisely where we are meant to be. My career began not in a classroom, but in a courtroom as a clerk. Initially, I found myself struggling, feeling that my qualifications didn’t align with the role. I often felt stuck, worrying that I was drifting away from my dreams. However, a pivotal conversation with a colleague changed my perspective entirely. She introduced me to the ALX Virtual Assistant program, and I recognized an opportunity to turn my situation into a growth experience. I transformed into a dedicated student, utilizing the court library during breaks for study, completing assignments, and even leveraging staff bus rides to catch up on lectures during my commutes. By the conclusion of the program, I had acquired valuable tech skills that not only broadened my horizons but also illuminated paths I had never considered before. In my journey with the Center for Systems Awareness, I have come to affirm that one of the most valuable lessons is the importance of entertaining the idea that my perspective on any given situation might not be the clearest. This confirmation has become a cornerstone for all future learnings and interactions, profoundly impacting how I approach both personal and professional challenges. Recognizing that my perspective may not always be the clearest requires a level of humility that fosters growth. It encourages me to approach situations with an open mind, ready to listen and learn from others. This openness dismantles the barriers of ego and allows for a richer, more nuanced understanding of the complexities we face. Entertaining the possibility of not seeing the full picture also enhances my problem-solving skills. It pushes me to ask better questions, seek diverse perspectives, and consider alternative viewpoints. This approach reduces the risk of blind spots and helps in making more informed and balanced decisions. This insight reinforces the importance of a continuous learning mindset. It reminds me that every interaction and experience is an opportunity to learn and grow. By consistently challenging my assumptions and being curious about different perspectives, I can stay adaptable and resilient in the face of change. In my role within the Ventura County Office of Education, especially in the Expanded Learning Services department, this insight is incredibly pertinent. Acknowledging that my view might be limited helps in creating a more inclusive and compassionate environment. This lesson has truly been a golden nugget for me. It’s a reminder that our understanding of any situation is always evolving and that by entertaining the idea that our perspective might not be the clearest, we open ourselves up to greater learning and more meaningful connections. This approach not only enhances my work within the educational system but also enriches my personal growth and interactions with the world around me. ❤️
