There are many drivers for measuring on-farm greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions but also some issues that need to be solved. Scope 3 farm-level emissions can represent up to 70% of food and agriculture companies’ total supply chain emissions. Since one can’t manage what one can’t measure, companies need to work together across the value chain to streamline GHG measurement if they want to move the needle and reduce these emissions. If companies wish to succeed in emissions reduction, the key could lie in creating standardised tools and methodologies for better accuracy and comparability, which would also wind up being beneficial for farmers. Not sure where to begin the measuring and reporting journey? According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator, eliminating 294,000,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent delivers the same benefit as eliminating the CO2 emissions from the generation of electricity for 57,204,922 homes in one year. We can deliver that benefit with our Methane Tamer™ feed additive, scientifically proven to reduce enteric methane emissions from cattle by up to 90%. All it takes is for 10% of the world's cattle (150 million) to be fed Methane Tamer. Even assuming a conservative emissions reduction of 70%, the decrease would be nearly the same as eliminating the CO2 emissions from generating electricity for over 57 million homes in a year. In other words, the impact and power of reducing enteric cattle emissions NOW is an immediate win for the climate and life on this planet. https://lnkd.in/gPZHS66 https://lnkd.in/gDnVqju #cattleemissions #climatechange #climatesolutions #foodindustry #foodindustryleaders #dairy #cattle

Greenhouse gases (GHGs) trap heat and are primarily caused by human activities over the past 150 years. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identifies six main sources of these emissions: 🚗 Transportation: Direct emissions from fossil fuels used in vehicles like gasoline and diesel. 💡 Electricity Production: Significant emissions from coal and natural gas used for generating 60% of the nation's electricity. 🏭 Industry: Emissions from fossil fuels used in manufacturing processes and energy production, exacerbated by electricity consumption. 🏢🏠 Commercial and Residential: Emissions from fossil fuel combustion for heating, cooling, and waste management, including electricity use. 🌾 Agriculture: Emissions from livestock, soil management, and rice production, with minimal indirect emissions from electricity use. 🌳 Land Use and Forestry: Acts as a carbon sink, absorbing more CO₂ than it emits, offsetting 13% of total emissions. In 2022, total US GHG emissions reached 6,343.2 million metric tons CO₂ equivalent. FLAG (Forest, Land, Agriculture) emissions account for 22% of global GHG emissions (US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)). Retailers, especially those in textiles, food and agriculture, may significantly contribute to these emissions through their value chains. If your company is setting a science-based target with SBTi, you must also address your FLAG emissions. Compliance standards for FLAG science-based targets: 🔹 SBTi and GHG Protocol: Recent guidelines require businesses with substantial FLAG emissions to set precise science-based targets 🔹 Action: Assess and manage FLAG emissions now — set science-based targets, including no-deforestation commitments Beginning your business’s FLAG journey may seem daunting. Vaayu makes it easier to start evaluating your FLAG emissions, using automation and technology to help you stay compliant and competitive. DM us to find out more. Food waste is a human problem, a climate problem, and a business problem. It is critical that producers take a look at their operations and supply chain to support different value chain stages in addressing food waste.
[BREAKING NEWS] A new report from ReFED—with support from Global Methane Hub—reveals the #methane hotspots for uneaten food in the U.S., and highlights corresponding #solutions that can reduce #foodwaste and slash methane emissions. The first-of-its-kind data emphasizes how wasting less food is a critical lever to mitigate #climatechange, because it is effectively a one-two punch—reducing methane both in the production of food as well as in its disposal. Let's think about #FoodWaste differently 🍲 Food waste– the edible and inedible remains from harvests, processing facilities, kitchens and plates– used to be perceived only as opportunities lost. It's true: The United States wastes between 30-40% of its supply annually (USDA), which if edible, represents more than 130 billion meals never eaten. Inedible food waste can be used to feed livestock, produce energy, and return to the soil as compost. What is often ignored is the #climate #footprint of wasted food. In the landfill, food waste decays anaerobically, producing 4 million metric tons of methane every year– equivalent to 75 million cars over 20 years (reFED). That number is 14% of annual U.S. methane emissions– and it's a number we can change easily. The takeaway? Curbing the amount of food that ends up in landfills– through cooking, preserving, donating, upcycling, feeding livestock, composting, and dozens of solutions– is a rapid, positive step towards a climate-forward future. #Foodwaste #methane #greenhousegasses #landfill #compost #sustainablefood

Our students want to make a difference, and colleges and universities are looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint as well. Through innovative menu and waste tracking programs like Leanpath, composting, or student-led initiatives such as Food Recovery Network, we’re working with campuses across the country to reduce food waste while providing opportunities for students to engage with this important work. That’s what true partners do – we develop solutions that not only address business needs for our clients, but also consider the social aspects by engaging students and employees in the process. This report from ReFED uncovers some interesting facts about ‘surplus food’ as one of the primary contributors to methane gas emissions. But more importantly, it also links to a solutions database complete with implementation costs for food waste solutions. It’s worth the read. #WasteLESSWeek2024 #Sustainability #CampusDining #Student Engagement #GreenInitiatives #FoodWaste #HigherEd #EcoFriendly #WasteLessSaveMore
