What is one of the toughest things you'll do as a newly elected BigLaw partner? Figure out how to take your ideas about business development so you spend your time effectively to make them succeed in practice. It isn't easy -- you get busy, your client contacts are busy, and the initiatives you start can easily get lost or pushed aside when you don't prioritize and keep on top of them. This is why I recommend to the new law firm partners that I coach that they develop a tracker for their business development activities, and all their client outreach -- including to calendar specific follow-up actions -- and then use this tool daily to keep yourself accountable for where you are in driving your practice forward. Why? Because you have to be focused in keeping up your client relationships and developing new ones, clear about what your purpose is in connecting with your contacts, and confident and direct when you ask to be trusted with work as their counsel. If you don't have that focus, you're just spinning wheels and at the end of your first year or so as a partner you may have had a few lunches with prospects, gone to some conferences, or tried some other outreach but you can't really say what it has done to grow your practice. Tracking what you're doing, and continuously refocusing your efforts based on your progress to date helps you to do that - and to let go of what isn't working.
