Being asked by your clients to change your practices is inconvenient, but probably not unfamiliar for many malting barley farmers. Elizabeth Lunik, Doriana Milenkova, Vito Martielli, Camillo Piero Alborghetti and I analysed European Cooperatives that are active in various crops, and found that growing barley is often highlighted as a major source of scope 3 emissions for brewers and distillers that signed up to SBTi. Apart from becoming more sustainable, the good thing about making changes and lowering your emissions is that it can help to get a seat at the table with retailers, and make the entire value chain a winner.The challenge for cooperatives is to arrange that benefits and costs are shared sufficiently between farmers, processors and manufacturers.
