𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗜 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗼𝘀𝘀 🌿🦻 After years of living with tinnitus, I was recently diagnosed with a rare type of genetic hearing loss that will continue to worsen over time. It was a lot to take in—both emotionally and in terms of processing all the new information. Hearing aids were recommended, but I was overwhelmed by the different options, features, and what it all meant for my future hearing. That’s when I discovered that #AI tools, specifically large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, could be an unexpected ally in helping me make sense of the situation: • 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺: #AI broke down my audiogram in very simple terms, clearly explained each aspect of my hearing loss and what it really meant, and even linked me to pertinent research & communities. • 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗶𝗱𝘀: It helped me compare different hearing aid models, features, and reviews—tailoring recommendations to my specific hearing needs. #AI even guided me through the myriad of colour options and visualised how the devices would look on me. While #AI didn't replace my audiologist’s expertise, it empowered me to absorb information at my own pace, ask better questions, and made this journey feel just a little less daunting. #AI has shown me that, even in the face of uncertainty, technology can be an incredibly powerful tool in navigating complex health challenges. Open AI's unveiling of their new empathetic voice model this week was in many obvious ways (Scarlett Johansson's voice) and subtle ways ("Can you talk like a robot") an homage to Spike Jonze' movie 'Her'. Given that movie is now more than 10 years old it's worth taking a moment to remember how it ends (spoiler alert: NOT WELL!). Actually, that's not quite true. For most of the movie, things go swimmingly well. A lonely man, full of existential angst, finds a new (virtual) friend who helps him to feel less alone and in doing so encourages him to open up more with his friends, be more engaged at work and to see more beauty in the world. Things go south when he falls in love with his AI friend (yes, there is a sex scene). And therein lies the lesson: AI companions make great therapists, conversationalists, and even friends to those who lack human contact. But once the line is crossed into romantic attachment things are likely to end badly. I was asked recently whether anyone has ever fallen in love with Eve, or vice versa. The answer is no, and that is intentional. Virtual companions are not here, IMHO, to be our soul mates or lovers. They are here to keep us company, to teach us things, to offer emotional support and advice. For anyone who lives alone (particularly older people) this is an incredibly valuable and much-needed service. In other words: it's good to talk, but keep your hands to yourself! Can AI look after me in old age? The BBC Radio 4 series The Artificial Human takes a look at the role AI can play in helping people stay independent longer and considers the dilemma of safety v. individual privacy. Interesting observations include: ☑ AI can assist in day-to-day care such as reminding a person to take their meds, attend an appointment, do exercise etc. ☑ AI can provide a lifeline for the lonely (eg apps with cat and dog avatars that converse with the person) ☑ AI can help keep people safe by monitoring falls and calling for help Though monitoring movement and other data. AI can impartially assess the risks of a person staying in their own home and not 'bully' an older person into a care home before they are ready. However, concerns were raised about privacy and certain ageist assumptions, especially about older people's sex lives. As an example, one older woman did not want 24/7 camera surveillance as she did not want her daughter to know that she was having a loving relationship with another woman. Finally, who is the target market for these emerging technologies? Older people or their carers? Does each group need a different approach?
