As part of the Australia-UK Free Trade Agreement, the two nations recently held their inaugural Strategic Innovation Dialogue in London. The talks are designed to support trade in innovative goods and services between two of the world’s most pioneering economies. And they come at a crucial time when both countries are aiming to strengthen and diversify global supply chains, transition to net zero emissions and ensure the safe use of critical technologies. The discussions pinpointed 4 priority areas for collaboration on innovation: • A ‘biobridge’ to advance new and innovative medicines, diagnostics and therapeutics • Battery manufacturing • Offshore wind power • Harmonising standards for responsible use of emerging technologies Find out more, https://bit.ly/4bldDSD

The EU's heavy reliance on 🇨🇳 China's zero-carbon technology poses risks, such as supply chain disruptions and high dependence. Meanwhile, 🇺🇸 the US is gaining ground with strong financial incentives under the #IRA. Building robust EU net-zero value chains is essential to reduce dependence on external suppliers and bolster our competitiveness. This will also mitigate risks of deindustrialisation within the EU. The Net Zero Industry Act is a first step towards strengthening our manufacturing base. But, as Linda Kalcher, our Executive Director, says, "Only a new European Industrial Strategy with an investment package, smart employment plan and support for companies can restore the EU's competitiveness." → Read more: https://t.co/PFxzfTbbZ1 #strategicEU #NZIA

In my latest article "International trade as an instrument for decarbonization: Exploring the EU-Gulf relations," I argue that international trade is critical for industrial decarbonization in that, through free trade, there can be open borders for access to cheap and good-quality green goods, which, in turn, can help decarbonize the economy and generate wealth. Ways in which the link between trade and sustainability can be designed include energy transition partnerships, capacity building, technology transfer, and access to green-product markets, among others. This article brings forward the potential of a trade and sustainability partnership between two regions: the European Union and the Gulf Cooperation Council. Available: https://lnkd.in/dueDhbFs

We're celebrating the 1st anniversary of the Australia-UK Free Trade Agreement (#AUKFTA). Since entry into force, Australian goods exports with preferential treatment under the A-UKFTA increased by 16% to March 2024. 📈 We're seeing strong growth across a range of #agricultural sectors which are now tariff free under the FTA, providing greater choice and helping to drive down costs for the consumer. Australia’s #medtech and #cleantech exports also grew significantly to March 2024. The FTA makes it easier for UK companies to invest in Australian renewables and other green-tech industries. The FTA’s world-first Innovation Chapter encourages science and research collaboration, and commercialisation of emerging technologies. New mobility pathways and the mutual recognition of qualifications support expansion in our bilateral commercial interests. This important and timely report stresses that we must continue to adapt and innovate: 📌 We need a strong framework programme to drive EU competitiveness. Fostering stronger synergies across science, industrial competitiveness, societal challenges are key elements of strengthening the EU’s research ecosystem. 📌 The report calls for an adequate budget: it estimates that around €220 billion for the period 2028-2034 is essential to meet future goals. 📌 Radical Simplification & Innovation: The programme needs bold changes, not least in international collaboration. https://lnkd.in/d3ZJmJ4z
