I'm loathe to criticize the University of Michigan as I love the university to an unhealthy degree, and I'm still reveling in the football national championship and 3x wins over Ohio. My experiences there shaped me more than anything outside of my family. So it absolutely pains me to critique the new Vision 2034 as a giant pile of focus grouped garbage that says nothing and means nothing. https://lnkd.in/g79MMqAi "Our vision is to be the defining public university, boldly exemplified by our innovation and service to the common good. We will leverage our interdisciplinarity and excellence at scale to educate learners, advance society, and make groundbreaking discoveries to impact the greatest challenges facing humanity." First off, this could be any public (why does it say public anyway, I want to crush Stanford, Notre Dame, and Princeton too) university anywhere in the world. And you know what I'm gonna stop there. There's no point in parsing this ephemeral banality pretending to be a vision. It's forgotten immediately after reading and cannot serve as a North Star since there is no there there. Simply put, a vision cannot and should not be predicated on the viewpoint of others. Nothing groundbreaking, bold, or innovative can ever come from this. DON'T LET OTHERS DEFINE YOU OR YOU END UP AS THE AVERAGE OF THOSE OTHERS. Michigan is not, nor ever has been average. This vision statement, however, falls far short of even reaching average and isn't remotely close to what we should expect from the leaders and best.

Lillian Drakeford ('10, PhD; '06, Midwest, MEd) is assuming the role of Interim Dean for the newly merged Colleges of Education and Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences at Central State University. Central State University is Ohio’s only public Historically Black College or University (HBCU) and a distinguished 1890 Land-Grant Institution. This merger aims to enhance operational efficiency, optimize resources, and foster a more enriched educational experience for students and faculty. It will support increased enrollment and, ultimately, produce more graduates in the fields of education, the social sciences, humanities, and the arts through streamlined academic pathways. This merger is a pivotal moment in the University’s rich 137-year history. “We aim to create a more cohesive academic environment that supports interdisciplinary collaboration and expands opportunities for both learning and research,” Drakeford explained.

It was interesting to break down years of economic data on inflation, unemployment, housing and international trade with the team. Learning how to craft a monetary policy response by combining insights from these data points was a great way to expand my quantitative analysis and public speaking skills.

The Best Graduation Speech of 2024 Is Absolutely Obvious, and It All Comes Down to Just 1 Word. A rainy day and an abbreviated speech, but some very useful lessons were shared. Robert Hale Jr.'s address to the graduates of the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth was truly memorable. He gave $1,000 in cash to each graduate, with $500 for them to keep and $500 to give away to someone in need. Certainly, giving money to graduates is a sure way to win hearts. However, the speech was more than just a generous gesture. From humble beginnings of washing dishes to becoming a dot-com billionaire, Hale shared his journey of success, failure, and redemption. It's a powerful story of resilience and giving back to the community. Watch the video at the bottom of the article to witness Hale's inspiring message unfold.
