Don't Be Dazzled by Titles: Build a Career of Impact in Software Engineering In today's competitive tech landscape, companies might use inflated titles to entice and retain talent. Don't be misled – a true sense of accomplishment comes from impactful work, not a fancy label. While titles offer a framework for understanding roles, focus on building a strong foundation of technical skills. Showcase your problem-solving abilities and the positive impact you've had on businesses. Ultimately, your value lies in the lasting contributions you make, not the title you hold. Fight for recognition based on your achievements, and build a career rich with accomplishments, not just decorated titles. It's the outcome and impact of your work that truly matters in the long run. #layoffs #hiring

Is computer science oversaturated? Here's a simple take on it. 😭 There has been an increase in the number of software engineers, leading to a perceived saturation in the market. This, however, is not the sole reason for recent layoffs. The current economic climate, heightened by the pandemic, has companies tightening their budgets, leading to a decrease in hiring. Moreover, during the pandemic, some companies found themselves financially overextended, leading to layoffs despite a lack of investment in tech. The key takeaway? If you're in this field solely for the monetary aspect and neglect to continuously practice and improve your skills, you might find it challenging to secure a job in the current market. However, if you're passionate about coding, consistently working on projects and improving your skills, it may still be harder than it was in 2020, but you can succeed! If you're seeking a role in tech, feel free to reach out. I might be able to assist you in your journey. #coding #layoffs #tech #softwareengineering #programming

Hot Take: the recent tech layoffs didn’t just affect the engineers they let go—they reshaped the market. Here’s how: 1️⃣ Talented engineers flood the market, but only briefly. They’re snapped up fast. 2️⃣ Remaining employees are demoralized and begin job hunting quietly. 3️⃣ Smart companies seize the moment to upgrade their teams. If you’re hiring engineers, now’s the time to act. The best talent isn’t waiting around—they’re moving to companies that value them. So don’t make the mistake of waiting too long. If you meet a talented candidate with great potential… make their holiday season by extending them an offer🎁🌲 #tech #hiring #hiringmanager #techlayoffs #layoffs #engineers #candidates #techrecruiting #ai #peoplecapital

So proud to work for a company that's making a difference and helping people gain new skills in emerging technologies. If you've recently been affected by layoffs, check out this program where you can gain some in-demand skills at no cost. #Udacity #Upskilling #Techskills #FreeTraining
It’s no secret that layoffs have affected countless professionals in the U.S. and beyond this past year. Unfortunately, this unsettling trend seems to be continuing. According to the Challenger Report, U.S. job cuts in March 2024 were the highest since January 2023, up 7% over February. The experience of being laid off is stressful to say the least. And the job hunt that follows is often no less emotionally taxing. At the same time, thousands of companies are hiring, with the Technology sector second only to the Energy sector for the most new positions announced in the first quarter of the year. There ARE opportunities out there! However, there is often a mismatch between open positions, sought after roles, skill sets, and locations. As more candidates compete for jobs, professionals who develop in-demand skills are qualified for more opportunities and have the ability to make the leap into a new career path. Which is why, starting today, we’re giving anyone laid off in the U.S. in the past year free access to Udacity’s entire catalog for 30 days. If you or someone you know has been impacted by layoffs, learn how you can redeem your free month in Victoria Papalian's post below. 👇 https://bit.ly/4doA232 #techlayoffs #layoffs #technologynews

"You'll Never Get a Job as a Software Developer? Think Again. 💥" 😢 The Reality: The job market feels brutal right now, and yes, tech layoffs are making headlines everywhere. But here’s the thing—it’s not just software engineering; every sector is feeling the pinch. 🤦♀️ The Bigger Picture: While today’s market might be worse than 2008, it’s still not as bad as the Dotcom Bust of 2002. The “bloodbath” we see in tech doesn’t mean the industry is dead. There’s still a ton of money in tech; companies are just waiting for the right time to invest. 💡 Why Tech Will Bounce Back: Software engineering drives innovation across industries. The fundamentals are strong—tech is critical, and its relevance isn’t going anywhere. Once the market stabilizes, the money will flow again. 🏋️ What Can You Do Now? Invest in Your Skills: Use this downtime to upskill and stay ahead. Be Resilient: Challenges like this build strength. Those who weather the storm will be in prime positions when the market rebounds. Hang in there. Tech will rise again, and so will you. 💪 #TechIndustry #SoftwareEngineering #Resilience #CareerGrowth #TechLayoffs #JobMarket

🚩 PSA: Beware the Red Flags (and no, they're not just for capture the flag) 🚩 It's tough out there, adventurers, but it’s even tougher when you find yourself stuck in a company where the red flags are popping up faster than side quests. Recently, I took on a mission that seemed promising at first—until I realized I’d been handed a ripped and burnt map. 🚩 No clear documentation on anything (seriously, can a girl get a quest log?) 🚩 Goals kept shifting (60 days till the deadline turned into 30? To use or not to use?) 🚩 A lot of improper usage of AI ( ...I don't even know how to explain how bad.) 🚩 Crucial legal issues were straight-up ignored (because apparently signatures and company info are optional now?) 🚩 Leadership felt like a chaotic raid party with no strategy. 🚩 Direction? A spinning compass. 🚩 Promises? Vague at best. 🚩 And when possible clients started asking if the whole program was legit and I addressed my concerns of this and more? …. Instead of addressing/fixing the problems, and concerns and building trust, I got booted for "not doing my job." 🤯 All of this in under 3 weeks! 💜 But here’s the thing: it wasn’t me, and if you’re dealing with similar nonsense or were given the boot after similar things, it’s not you either. If your job feels like a never-ending grind with constant miscommunication and legal issues being ignored, it's time to pack up your gear and move on. You deserve a guild that equips you with the right tools, values your effort, and listens when you sound the alarm. 🚩 Don’t stay in a party full of red flags—you’re worth more than that! #RedFlags #KnowYourWorth #QuestForBetterJobs #YouDeserveBetter #LevelUpYourCareer #LayOffs #GreenBanner

There are a lot of layoffs happening, entry-level engineers struggling to get jobs, and senior engineers not getting the salary they want. Here are a few tips to help with this... and these tips are probably controversial, but I'd rather get the backlash than not help you. ✅ Get Really Good At What You Do This isn't a "go to work 9-5 and hope for the best” kind of thing. Even outside of your job, you have to study, learn new things, and grow. Becoming really good at what you do isn't something that you can do in a few years from working your 9-5. ✅ Share Knowledge Figure out a way to learn in public. It could be live streaming on twitch, blogging, YouTube, or even writing LinkedIn posts. Make sure that you refine your learnings and the best way to do that is to teach others about them. ✅ Sacrifice "Fun" For Study This is a tough one, but it's necessary. At some point, you will have to push past your comfort level. This won't be for your entire life (or maybe it will), but there will come points where for a few months or even a few years, you'll have to put in a hefty amount of hours, time, and dedicated to push past your limits. It'll require sacrificing a Saturday or a holiday. ✅ Figure Out What You Enjoy Finding enjoyment in what you do is important. Call it "passion" or whatever, the word doesn't matter. What does matter is enjoying what you do. It's super important. If you don't, you'll only go so far. #layoffs #engineering #jobs

Is computer science oversaturated? The tech world is at a crossroads. With 50,000 layoffs (Layoffs.fyi) in tech YTD and an army of new CS grads entering the scene, CS majors can’t help but wonder: is it over for me? 😔 Here's the Twist: A CS degree isn't your golden ticket anymore. The game-changer? Building something remarkable. In a sea of competition, passion projects make you the lighthouse. 💡 The Real Deal: It’s not the degree that sets you apart; it’s what you do with it. Dive into a project you're passionate about. That's your true resume. 💖 We're in This Together: Let’s use this challenge as a catalyst for innovation. Share your projects, inspire, and let's redefine what it means to be in tech. 🧑💻 🚀 Challenge Accepted? Comment what ideas you’re passionate about below. I’ll start. The recent wave of layoffs in the tech industry is deeply unsettling. I understand how challenging and uncertain this period can be. My thoughts are with everyone affected, and I hope better opportunities come your way soon. For those in stable roles, it's important to remain vigilant. Stability can sometimes create complacency. As Warren Buffett said: "If your salary is your only source of income, you are one step away from poverty." Diversifying your income sources isn’t just smart—it’s essential for long-term security. For professionals in Software Engineering, here are some strategies to consider for personal and financial growth: Build Your Brand: Share valuable insights, contribute to your field, and establish your professional identity. Create & Sell Digital Products: Explore opportunities like courses, eBooks, plugins, UI templates, or boilerplate code. Launch a SaaS Product: Tap into the global market with a software solution. Expand Horizontally: Gain expertise in fields like AI, Machine Learning, and Data Analytics. Deepen Vertically: Develop skills in Security, DevOps, and Infrastructure. Focus on Impact: Helping others—whether through mentorship or meaningful contributions—leaves a lasting legacy. If you’re creating or selling something, always prioritize quality. Strong products stand the test of time and enhance your professional reputation. Let’s continue to support one another, especially during these challenging times. #Layoffs #CareerDevelopment #TechLeadership #SoftwareEngineering #ProfessionalGrowth

Since my last post, I've gotten a lot of questions about the interview process, specifically how I landed a role in this tough market. I'll share what I can over time. To keep it 100, the bar, from what I can tell, is higher compared to 2021. You can compare it to the Olympic 100m dash. In 1956, the men's time was 10.5 seconds; in 2020, it's 9.8. Coding interviews have gotten similarly more challenging. I was lucky enough to receive three offers when deciding to go with Google. That said, I wouldn't necessarily say the questions have become harder, but the margin of error is definitely less than it was in 2021/2022. Progressively more people are entering tech, from new grads to those from non-traditional backgrounds and transitioning professionals. The unrealistic "Day in the Life" videos of SWEs not actually doing work, with their hardest task being getting dressed, also didn’t help with the influx. 😬 Then add layoffs... Many of those affected by layoffs took the opportunity to get very good at Data Structures and Algorithms, again raising the bar. Meanwhile, the number of openings either stayed stagnant or decreased. I'm not saying this as a deterrent, but more to lay out what is out there and the possible expectations. Understanding this helped put my own expectations into perspective and gave me an idea of what level I needed to be at to have a chance to clear my interviews. You'll never feel 100% ready, but you should be comfortable enough with your skills along with the possibility of rejection. I'll share more specifically my prep strategy in another post. You can find the long form version of this post on my blog #softwareengineering #layoffs #interviewing #tech #swespot

A sombre analysis by Bhavik Patel. Compared to Engineers: • Researchers are 3.6x more likely to be laid off. • Product Managers are 2.6x more likely to be laid off. • Designers are 2.3x more likely to be laid off. As someone who has worked those roles and experienced multiple layoffs, it's no surprise. But this post isn't anti-Engineer. It's the opposite. Throughout all the boom and bust cycles, Engineers have been fantastic at defending how they work and demonstrating their value. How might the other roles do the same? Personally, I think the core difference is that it's possible for many people to do research, product management, or design to an acceptable standard. Comparatively poorly but apparently good enough. Conversely, it's not possible for many people to do engineering to the same standard. It simply won't work well enough, if at all. It's this gap in competency (real or perceived) that protects Engineers. On one hand, I'm grateful that the other roles are more accessible, but, on the other hand, I wish these other roles were equally valued and protected. Source:
