From Paul Larudee at FPM News: Some of you are probably aware of the initiative below, which provides powers rarely invoked by the UN, and which cannot be vetoed. In principle, it can even empower the use of peacekeeping forces to be used by willing countries, but the only time that happened, the GA United for Peace resolution was sufficient by itself for the Security Council to agree to send forces in 1956, without having to override a veto. As with the ICJ rulings, the difficulty is with the implementation. What countries would be willing to send troops to end the genocide, and would those countries most likely be ones considered hostile to the US and the West, and therefore set off a major world war? I consider that unlikely, but only because such countries will not send troops in the first place. In practical terms, if the most powerful nations do not agree on the implementation, there will be none (except by heroic Yemen). Because of this, Israel and the US can simply ignore United for Peace actions. Nevertheless, there is no harm in invoking the procedure, and we never know what might result from it.

The evidence linking UNWRA to Hamas are mountain high crystal clear The evidence of the UN 🇺🇳 covering for UNWRA are equally clear The media outlets that still tries to avoid reporting the truth - or highlighting the UN “investigation” (if we can even call it that) denying that Israel provided evidence of UNWRAs involvement in #7thoctmassacre or the direct links to #Hamas - also have a huge responsibility and blame. One commits war crimes One covers it up One tries to distort the narrative The combined force of these three elements poses a significant threat to the political and security structures entrenched within much of the European political establishment.

In this EJIL Talk post my colleague Anna-Christina and I argue that the siege that Israel has been imposing on North Gaza and related measures it has implemented there in recent weeks entail serious violations of the IHL rules forming the law of occupation as well as those governing siege warfare. We also point out factors engendering grave concerns that the Israeli military is effecting the permanent displacement and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from North Gaza, paving the way for annexation and note that "Israel’s invocation of ostensibly humanitarian provisions – such as the IHL rules on evacuations – for such manifestly unlawful objectives is distressing, devoid of credibility, and ineffectual". We further observe that the catastrophic humanitarian conditions prevailing in North Gaza as a result of Israeli actions “from the destruction of homes and agricultural land as well as the denial of food and water to hospitals under attack and persons dying under the rubble – also raise serious questions about the commission of crimes against humanity (qua a widespread or systematic attack directed against a civilian population) and genocide”. Finally, the post outlines consequences for third States that arise from the allegations against Israel and in particular from the alleged violation of the Genocide Convention.

Since April 2023, as many as 150,000 people have been killed in the Sudan's ongoing civil war, and some 10 million have been forced from their homes, according to the United Nations—making it the largest displacement crisis in the world. With no end to fighting in sight, Sudan is teetering on the edge of a famine that could kill hundreds of thousands, and it is facing a potential genocide that international aid agencies say may already be happening. Since the war erupted, Sudan has been closed to most international journalists—until now. Wall Street Journal journalists accompanied by Sudanese army officials traveled to the front lines of the fight.
